My ///AMG CLK55 has become a lonely, unloved car. It deserved it.

Yep, after 4 bad catalytic converters (all from bad internal welds - you should have heard them when they went), 2 broken motor mounts, a broken navi system, a broken window regulator and just yesterday a piece of trim coming off of this 3 year old hunk of garbage, I decided to go out and buy a new Acura TL. I've gotten a good tongue lashing from all of my friends with a few "Ick! Why?" statements. Jeezus, are people that really wrapped up in a badge? This Benz had to be the most problematic vehicle I ever owned...what's worse was the dealer was no help - usually couldn't get appointments scheduled for weeks. If I want problems, I'll find an old French car.

Anyway, I have to admit it's a sweet little 4 door car. The navi system is pretty nifty and you can talk to it + this is my first experience with Bluetooth in a car and satellite radio. Pretty geeky stuff, at least to me. I'm pretty smitten with the little guy. Always had good luck with Japanese cars in the past. Besides, I knock on the doors of people going through foreclosure and have heard one too many "looks like you make enough money off of people like us" statements already. I gave the Benz keys to my fiance and even she won't drive it in fear of problems. Sheesh. Poor thing (the car, not her).

Yeah, I really dig this little ride. Not too big, not too small. I love all the gadgets, so I'm way more entertained in this thing than the other car. Good bang for the money IMO.

You bet. You should see all the comments I get about my VW Passat. Especially funny from the idiots who have Audi A4s (produced on the same assembly line). I always say "Look on the bright side, you paid more"...but most of them don't get it.

    enjoy!

I like the AMG lineup of mercedes yet I hear they have a few years of trouble (like 2002?)

Glad to hear your Acura TL is servicing your needs of reliability. I'd be dumping any make of any car that gave such crappy reliability as what you stated with the MB....

TL is a sharp looking car too.

    Congrats.

I think I was out the door for just under $36k. Yup, my Benz is an 02 - it's the CLK right before the body switch. The newer one doesn't have the same curb appeal to me at all - it's a lot less aggressive-looking. I remember how badly I wanted that thing when I bought it and it's pretty much been pampered despite the issues.

BTW, I considered everything. The new M45 Infiniti, the Volvo S60 (?? I think that was it), the new GS430, the MB E500, the Chrysler 300 SRT-8, the new Charger and the BMW 5 series. I even entertained the prospect of a Scion Xb with LCD screens in all the headrests. My price range was very wide here, obviously. Just kept coming back to the TL because of the standard features. XM/Sirius, for instance, is an option on a lot of these vehicles where it's standard on the TL and their pricier RL models. The local Chrysler dealer had a markup on the window for loaner cars (huh? a $50k car should come with a loaner if it breaks). MB wouldn't budge on E500 prices much in spite of my history. In the end it was a tossup between the M45 and what I bought. The M45 is sweet, but felt nowhere near as powerful as it's advertised hp.

My 1998 NSX-T is still rock solid and drives and looks like new. I think Honda/Acura makes a good product.

Congrat's on the TL. I like the look and the features but I found the car had a bit too much torque steer for my tastes. But not everyone drives as hard as I do and I'm willing to bet that 99% of people won't even notice.

    Good luck.

The male voice sounds like Alec Baldwin

I would have willingly run the real Alec over last year someone had messed with the defaults and it kept trying to get me to go to Big Sur as the most direct path from Montarey to Salinas

Eeew. It's an overpriced over-sized V6 accord with absolutely no sense of fun at all.

It will look slightly better to your clients. Actually, you should drive a pickup truck. Nobody complains about a $60k pickup, but drive up in a $6k used BMW 7-series...

Can't belive you gave up all the power of the blown AMG motor. (02 was a blower car, right?) I couldn't go back.

All those issues are pretty minor, really you sound more unhappy with the DEALER than the car itself.

I do agree Benz's (& BMW's for that matter) quality has been falling for nearly a decade now. That's probally why I drive an 1988 V-12.

If he'd kept it as ol' unreliable - he'd be singing a new version of an old, irritating standby

On the 12th day of expiry,
    Mercedes gave to me
    12 converters converting
    11 systems a-naving
    10 mounts a-mounting
    9 windows regulating
    8 pieces trimming
    7 months of waiting
    6 trucks a-towing
    5 Benz rings
    4 Calling cards
    3 French cars
    2 turds wearing gloves
    and a massive coronary

wax: it's less the new cars than the new dropout moron techs (combined with the cars just getting more COMPLEX, not nessecarily less reliable.)

I would bet my lunch money he did not have 4 bad cats, but rather something else wrong that was never found/diag'd properly, killing the cats.

And I'd bet dinner that 50% of the other problems were caused/precipitated by the dealer mist-treating the car.

I have a 1988 750il. A car absolutely reknownd for gremlins/goblins/etc. It is not easy to work on, but it's still a car, and it has been quite reliable for me.

I like the TL, it's a decent looking car with Honda quality. It's not extremely flashy but it does the job.. always better to fly under the radar if clients are going to see it.

I'm suprised you had the problems you did with the CLK, my friend/roommate had a C43 for a couple of years and it was rock solid despite the beating we gave it every single day.

    REMIX,
Good decision. MBs are probably the poorest built cars made today. Everyone I know who has a one built w/in the last 5yrs has had many problems. There have been a few articles recently in the WSJ regarding all the quality issues they have. Mercedes had its heyday and tried to keep making money by their name and cutting quality. Now their imaged is tarnsihed for some time to come.

Did this thread resonate with me. My wife had two MBs. A 2000 Sl500 that has given us no problems in 30k. None, nada, nix. Great solid car for what it is. I bought her an ML500 in 2003. Incredible problems. Not 1 but 3 washer fluid tanks for example. Brakes every 8k and tires every 10K. Massive depreciation to boot. I'll hold on to the SL but will not trade for a new based on my "new" benz experience. I bought a TL to replace the ML. The nav is great and everything works. A much better implementation than either Mb or the one in my BMW 745. It's plenty quick as well. It's funny what a bad experience will do. It's already cost them two sales with me. The TL and the 745 which I love. For all of the complaints about the 7 series I have had no problems and the car just feels younger than an S class. Lot's of viable options out there.

    I will swear by my TL..its a great car...and a great value
Cars these days tend to be either one or the other, but never both. It has great pickup, the sportshift, and really good seats (I have the 2000 model)

It drives like a C Class Mercedes, and costs a lot less..plus its a HONDA! can't go wrong there

    good decision

Can't belive you gave up all the power of the blown AMG motor. (02 was a blower car, right?) I couldn't go back.

Nah, man. 02s were NOT blower cars. Those came later. The C32s of that vintage were blown, btw.

I can definitely go back and, yes,the dealer certainly factored into the problem. When you start your $72k MB in the morning and hear what sounds like 50 loose marbles in the muffler and can't get an appointment for two weeks...well, there's a problem. Multiply that experience by four and it becomes downright infuriating. Oh, and did I mention the looks one gets at the grocery store when a $72k MB rolls by, clankety-clanking like it's about to fall apart? Nah, they can keep their three-pointed star. I'm letting it run out of warranty and then it's gone.

Besides, how the hell do motor mounts break like that?

I really drive like a granny. That car was rarely driven hard and currently has 46k on the odo.

The cats were a known issue on those particular cars.

One more thing, this TL ius actually quieter than my Benz. The steering feels lighter and a little more flimsy, but I'm not sweating that.
