I am in the final stages of re-assembling my 85 Euro Mondial Qv and put power to the car this weekend and all electrical accessories work – the gauges, windows, the flashers, the power mirrors, antenna, fan, hood, trunk and glove box poppers, radio, hazards, headlights, etc.

However, when I turn the key, nothing happens. Here is the background:
    • I have a new fuse board from Guido installed
    • The starter (ignition) switch was untouched, however there was a wire spliced into one of the connectors which I eliminated
    • I installed a new Anderson Power PP120 Powerpole connector in the engine bay where the positive battery cable connects to the cable for the starter
    • There is a Bosch starter relay which I did not change or test but I tested for 12v on it and couldn’t get a reading
    • The starter was rebuilt by a very good shop but I didn’t test it off the car…
What are the right steps to diagnose this?

Start at the back and try to hot wire the starter?

Start at the front and try to override the ignition switch?

    Remove the relay all together??

Appreciate everyone's help with this as it’s the next big step to try to get the car on the road for the summer. Thank - Joe

On the 87, 3.2 mondial the supply to the key switch comes straight from the fuse board using 2 red wires, from the keyswitch, the solenoid signal comes from it via a white wire. You can pull the wire off the starter solenoid and check for 12 volts with the key turned to start. Solenoid will probably have an earth connection. Check the big wire on solenoid for 12 volts
Look at the other thread on here as common info

The white one should have 12 volts when the key is turned, if my 3.2 drawings match your car

Thanks Mike - Does the key need to be in the "start" position or just the first turn of the key in the ignition?

    Joe,
I don't have the wiring diagram for your car, that being said, I would do the following:
    1. Make sure you have 12 V to the starter. This should always be present, if not start back tracing to the battery
    2. With someone turning the key to "start" check for 12 V to the solenoid. If not present start back tracing to the start switch. If it is present it would indicate a bad starter/solenoid.
    Regards
    Jeff

...and I have good wiring diagrams. Bought from afterburner - he takes the Ferrari drawings and re-creates them in color with good annotations. Thanks again - Joe

Having just replaced my starter, I would recheck your Anderson connector, the wire can kind of pop out as you push the connector on, the plastic will lock in place but the wire may actually be loose.

Make sure the white wire on the starter is connected to the correct pin on the solenoid. It is pin number 50, the other pin is unused. The pin 50 is the lower pin on the solenoid when looking at the starter from underneath the car.

I would bypass the relay and see what happens, the relay adds another failure point, although can solve for wiring degradation issues which is why they get put in.

Ha. I literally just finished tweaking the Anderson connector and it now works as it should. Thank you
