Hello to all members, this is the first time I write in this forum. I own a 308 QV since last december, and need some help with some noise comming from the gearbox area (exactly from the drop gears I think).

The noise appeared after changing the oil from gearbox and the oil from clutch bell housing.
Following instructions of my owners manual, after draining both the gearbox and clutch bell housing I filled up them with new oil, in the gearbox until the lower edge of the plug hole, and in the clutch bell housing adding only 100 gr of oil (really 150-160gr I think).
    I used Valvoline Durablend 75-90W-LS.

The noise sounds only when the car is hot and stopped with the engine running at iddle speed. If I press the clutch pedal the noise disappears.
It sounds like clack, clack and it seems random.

Anyone knows what could be the reason of this noise?
Do you think that 100gr is enough oil, or could be a mistake in the owners manual?

Sorry because of my bad english.

    Thanks

I recently changed my gearbox fluid (was using Mobile 1 75W-90) to a new brand from a company called Lubrication Engineers. I had heard that Ferrari of Central Florida used it so I thought I'd give it a try. With the new brand it is making the same sounds as yours. I just received a box of Redline 75W-90 NS and I'm going to change my fluid again tomorrow.

I'll let you know if my sound goes away. Maybe someone on this site could provide us some guidance on why the gearbox is making this sound.

Thanks Greg, I´ll wait for your experience with the new oil.

I am / was hoping that someone else would jump in and provide some information on the effects that different gearfluids have on the gearbox / dropdown gears. In the past when I used the Mobile 1 75W-90, I heard nothing (relatively) from the gearbox.

Changed my gearbox fluid tonight...replaced with Redline 75W90NS. We'll give her a drive tomorrow and see (hear) the results.

I am using the swepco on advice of several f mechanics, my car is on stands so cant say how well it works. That said I had a chattering sound coming from the drop down area, and it turned out the car was idiling to slow, 800 rpms, anything below 1000 and the transfer gears make a weird sound, once sped up it went away. I changed all the bearings in there before i figured this out! BTW when you change the GB oil just fill it all from the transfer gear hole it overflows to the GB and you know you have enough oil in there. close the two bottom plugs and when the GB oil comes out the side it is done. I put a little extra in, as I was told 5 gear is on top and if starved for GB oil it will wear.

I finally changed the gearbox fluid (with Redline) and not only was there a noticable reduction in gear chatter, the gearbox shifts much better.

For me, it was really noticable when at a redlight or stopsign. Now with the Redline fluid, there is no more unwanted sound.

Robert, it's also good to know about the 800RPM issue. Thanks for the heads-up.

Ok, it seems like the problem is the brand of the oil, because the "Valvuline durablend" I used was also a 75-90 gear oil.

I really notice the sound in the first redlight I stopped after the oil change, and it was after some kilometers driving the car in open roads.
My car iddles at 1000 rpm so I think that the cause of the noise is not there.

Anyone knows what could be the element making the noise (bearings, gears, ...) and why is so important one or other brand of oil if they are all 75-90?

I´ll try to find redline oil, but here in Spain it wil not be easy.

    Thanks!!

If you find the Redline oil, you need to find the version with the "NS" designation: 75W90NS. It's an additive that Redline uses. There are other threads on here where it is discussed. If you use a regular 75W90 gear oil, you need to add an non-slip (NS) additive.
