This just started: a squeal/whistle from the pumpkin area when the car is in neutral, that resolves instantly when the clutch pedal is just barely touched. Did the on/ off pressure on the clutch pedal for a minute, now the noise is gone, but I presume it will return. There already was a tiny bit of noise when the clutch pedal is down suggesting throw out bearing going bad, but this new noise is when the pedal is released. I know there is also a bearing at the back of the case that the clutch sits in. Maybe noise from there? How can you pin point source?

Even when the clutch pedal is released, the throw out bearing is still in contact with the pressure plate "fingers" (held against them by the two springs behind the bearing) and it is turning. It looks very much like dry throw out bearing.

Years ago I was the one who blew the whistle on Ferrari's dirty little secret of the clutch shaft stake ring coming loose. The answer is you can't tell if it is T/O bearing or stake ring. You have to make removing the shaft part of occasional maintenance and checking. The few miles these cars are driven I'm thinking 1/10 years or annually if you race the car. Once the pumkin is off to look at the T/O bearing the shaft is right there. Build a big puller and slide hammer it out. The penalty for the ring coming loose is very high as in destroyed gearbox.

Mechanics stethescope on the gearbox case sounds the same bad T/o bearing or bad stake ring

Thanks FBB! The good news is I have staked the heck out of that ring during seal changes in the past, so it must be the T/O bearing. The bad news is they don't exactly give those suckers away.
So FBB, as the font of all 348 knowledge (since no one has thrown out an answer to the other thread I have going) any idea how to split the 2 piece bracket to remove the bearing on the alternator tensioner??

That seems pretty straight forward. Remove the slotted backing plate, remove the circlip, heat up the outside and give it a whack to see if one bearing falls out the other side.

Great!! Thanks so much. Wasn't sure how they went together and didn't want to guess wrong and damage it. The fact that it had the oblong slot made me wonder if it unscrewed. Apparently not

Slot just for sliding up and down for belt tensioning, not for twisting. Should be an easy fix and the bearing was only $20...for a Ferrari!
