I have recently noticed that my Cali has started to make an annoying noise and it seems to be the fuel pump.

When I first get in my Cali and turn the key the fuel pump pre-charges and it makes a droning noise (I never noticed it in my previous Cali). When the car is started this noise can continue to be heard. The noise comes and goes when starting and stopping on a journey and as the car fully warms up is disappears.

The noise is only apparent first thing in the morning after the car has been sat overnight.

The noise seems to be coming from behind the driver (right hand side UK car).

Has anyone else experienced similar problems or can shed any further light on this?

I believe that I have the same problem, it begins when I start and it takes a little in disappearing.

My E39 BMW used to make a gentle whirring noise whenever I got in the car. The noise would continue even after I remove the key from the ignition. I discovered that it was due to a small fan that collects air samples from the cabin to determine the air temperature. So it was a "feature". Apparently the BMW fan stops after about 15 minutes. I think I even sat in the car one time to see just how long it took for the fan to stop running.

I have heard a noise similar to the BMW's in my California on a few occasions and it seems to go away after a while. It did sound more like a small fan than a pump and it came from the dash somewhere so it may be unrelated to your experiences. However, I do wonder if the change in seasonal temperature and use of the A/C has brought that noise on - it may also relate to why you only hear your noise first thing in the morning. Some car component may be "acclimatizing". Otherwise, I don't notice any fuel pump noises, especially since I almost always drive with the roof down.

I'll continue to listen for noises but the exhaust is quite distracting. :D

    Thanks for the reply 4th_gear.

It is definitely not a fan problem, and it is coming from the rear.

Many thanks for the answer. I will pass on to my local dealer and hopefully they will be able to fix.

Is it a faulty component? If so do you know the part number?

I am surprised the fuel pressure regulator is in the gas tank. I thought they are normally mounted on the engines, near the intake manifold and the fuel injector rails.

Maybe there's a fuel pump in the tank. Some cars have more than one fuel pump and an extra one's in the tank. That one can start to get noisy when it wears out.

If a car has a fuel pump in the tank - TRY TO MAKE SURE YOUR TANK IS ALWAYS FULL especially if you constantly put a lot of G forces on your car. The gas tank fuel pump needs to keep itself lubricated and cooled by bathing itself in fuel. If you often run your car close to the 1/4 mark or less, the pump will eventually wear out for obvious reasons.

I wish I could find myself a service manual for the California - the one from Ferrari probably costs $5k. :(

Good work! Looks like #31 may be your culprit. There may also be 2, one on each side.

Also notice how far up the pumps are mounted from the absolute bottom of the lower portion of the fuel tank. IMO, the tanks in our cars should not get below 1/2 empty if you want to be safe!

I mentioned on another thread that my E30 BMW also had 2 pumps and the one in the tank got whiny after some years, from not being constantly bathed in the fuel tank! Learned this from my trusty M5 mechanic - best guy in Toronto!

You can actually hear the whiny pump and zero in on its location from outside the car if it's noisy enough to hear it from the inside.

yes 31 is housing with 2 pumps in it,32 is filter, regulator unit, system uses the second fuel pump when more fuel is needed, cold start, hard accell, the regulator has a tendency to produce noise when the 2nd pump is operating
