So I'm driving my wife to work in Hoboken in the downpour today and there is road flooding everywhere. We are in the Escalade so we're in good shape as long as we take it easy. We detour around a couple of low spots but we wind up on Truck 1-9 heading into Jersey City. No problem getting over the bridge but the intersection at 440 is a mess. Trucks can handle it but cars, not so much.

What do I see, abandoned in the middle of the flooded intersection? A Maserati Coupe. I know it's supposed to be a good daily driver, but geez....

Why is that moron of the day?

Maserati coupe is not a F40. It's no less of daily driver than a BMW 3 series. It's just unfortunate to get stuck probably due to excessive flooding, a 3 series probably will get stuck too if driven in the same manner.

Of course it's not an F40, but it's not a pickup, either. Taking it out in the first place - to me that's ill-advised, but it's true that the cars don't melt in the rain. But guessing at the depth of a flooded intersection in a sports car, given the price of being wrong - that's stupid.

Consider: in addition to whatever water damage the car sustained, when the driver had to abandon it the car was left sitting in the middle of the road where it could easily be hit or precipitate (no pun intended) some other accident.

I don't mean to mock the guy, I'm sure he feels worse than anyone. But the sight of that car half-submerged in the a$$-end of Jersey City ....

I do not believe driving over 2" puddle at 15 mph can kill the motor on a Maserati spyder. Maserati has a decent ground clearance.

You can drive an Enzo over 2" puddle and I am sure it will manage.

I think it all depends on how the water splashes up into the engine compartment and whether it gets ingested into the air intake for the engine. Water in engine air intake = bad news baby!

I drove an 86 Ford Taurus through about 6"-8" of water flowing across a street caused by a summer shower at about 5 mph - hydrolocked the motor. I turns out the air intake is fairly low on that car and it sucked the water right in.

If the car is stalled, half submerged in water as you described, at best the electricals are in trouble, most likely the motor is done. Exect to see it on ebay soon - 'lightly used, never seen rain, slight water damage...'

    Regards,

    Art S.
