My father passed away a few months ago, and has left a few older cars behind. Generallly he had maintained his cars to a good mechanical standard.

I drove one of the cars that had not been driven much in the last couple of years, and the brakes felt lacking bite. It is a top spec 2006 year Mazda 6 V6 car but with only 70,000km on it.

I did a closer visual inspection, and saw as an odd brake disc wear pattern on the front wheel - it looked like half the pad was not contacting the disc. The pad was near new thickness (as it was on the other side).

Before I get the wheel off and take a closer look, would anyone like to share a diagnostic of what would cause this? I presume a caliper is stuck but, the half worn disc aspect is not what I woud expect. This is not something I have ever had to deal with so perhaps others who have seen something like this can weigh in.

Only on Just Rolled In. Has to be a serious problem, misassembly, wrong part, etc.. The position of the caliper (and therefore pads) looks far to outboard from the rotor OD.

If it looks that way on the other side it is likely normal for that car. The C5/C6 corvette rears do exactly that.

Only on the one front side. I would never have thought something like this could be normal! But in my case, something is wrong on one side and must be caliper related. But eg. I would not have expected a sticking caliper pin or brake pad in the caliper would create this half disc wear pattern, like the lower half of the disc has never been contacted.

Looks like it was some relatively minor corrosion causing the pad to stick in the caliper. Properly cleaned and antisieze compound put on, and works as it should.

I would never have expected the corrosion to have that kind of impact, visually it was not noteworthy and looked like things should have worked ok.

Reminder that especially for disused cars they still need the caliper cleaning and lubrication as part of a service every few years.
