I seek the community’s visceral reaction to my interest in adding an “accent” racing stripe to my Dino. I am preparing to paint with a gray-silver metallic the freshly restored chassis. I have sketched on paper the concept of a bright yellow “wine glass” shaped area from the front hood narrowing until at a point somewhat forward of the window spritzers a 12-inch wide stripe over the roof, which when continuing reward at the end of the engine lid widening again (in a wine glass contour) to end at the rear deck lid. If well designed, one could impose a "Zebra" effect where the net effect might lead to the question, "Is the car gray with yellow stripe, or yellow with gray side accent." That is, is the car yellow on gray or gray on yellow.

If anyone has time and is proficient with sketching software, a rough drawing superimposed on a real Dino would be great. I have seen some remarkable artistic talent on this Chat room. While I understand this is not original, I believe it would accent the car nicely. Furthermore, I know many will respond in one of two ways: 1) “It’s your car, do what makes you happy.” Or 2) “Why alter what is a lovely original design.”

Any other thoughts? Potential impact on value (not that I plan on selling)? Reponses are appreciated before I sober up.

    Thanks.

Vik - thank you for moving my question into the Dino forum. However, I believe the question is more general and not model specific. That is why I posted the thread in the General forum. It concerns community reaction to "bold" paint design on original Ferraris. That said, I respect your judgement.

    Thank you.

I say, "Do something different" and don't listen to the "concours" wankers.
You should do what makes you happy and if you decide in the future you don't like it you can always repaint. After all it's only paint. Congrats on not doing Red/Tan because it's lame and not in any way unique.

Allow me to rephrase - "...Vintage (thru Dino/365 GTC4)..."

JCR - thank you for your constructive thoughts. My seats are black with red Daytona inserts. Carpets likely to be gray. Black leather door panels and firewall cover.

    Thanks.

When I got my Dino it had been resprayed without the black undercoating on the lower portions of the panels. I used 4x6 photos and marked them with black marker at different levels to see what I wanted, that being in the pre-Photoshop era. You could also take the blue painter's tape and try making the shape you're considering on the car, then photograph that.

Once you have the shape you like, maybe someone here could do an image in Photoshop for you. But I don't think anyone can decide what shape you want.

When I've tried this kind of thing I can't get the reflections and darkness gradations right to make it look real, but I'm sure that a more expert user could do it easily.

Value wise, I think many buyers would figure in the price of a respray when they considered purchase of a "unique" paint job.

Jim - thanks for the input. Will work with painter's tape to trace out the shape.

    Thanks.

    Jim,
If you do go w/ the accent, I would suggest having it applied as a vinyl graphic. That way, if you want to change or eliminate the design it can be easily removed.

Actually that paint treatment is very close to that used on the 250LMs......a little wider around the front grill opening and diminishing to a stripe up and over the roof......I have some miniatures in my die cast collection!

    Sorry, no pics.

Various colors were used by the different squads or even on the Factory team cars.

    Hi Jim,

I like it. With a red accent in the Dino's interior a red stripe would also work. May I suggest an off-color yellow, like the mustard yellow that Dino came in?

There was a white 500 Superfast here in California for awhile that had a dark blue center stripe. There is (was) also in Italy a midnight blue 275LM with a bright yellow stripe, signifying Modena's (the town of) color. I have also seen an orange Miura with a white central stripe (Lake Como).

    Keep us posted.

John, thanks for the information. Glad that others have chosen to be so bold.

    Thanks.
