I had always wanted a Heuer Rally Master from the 70s. We had one in our sponsored rally car in 1971, but that belonged to the sponsor. Since then I had wanted one, perhaps to install in the Stratos.

The Stratos has no natural attachment point for a Rally Master, but then I thought I might install a set in the Dino. That is why I was asking about radio blanking plates elsewhere.

The vintage Rally Master sets are hard to find now, and condition is always a bet at a lottery. However, Tag-Heuer did make a re-issue, and these are still available.

Is that a good idea? Or sacrilege?

I really love these clocks, does anyone know if they are still available?

I love them, too, George. If you want a vintage one, you will have to Google as they turn up occasionally. This is a good site -

    Retro-uk - Dash mounted watches

As I mentioned, Tag-Heuer did a limited run a few years ago, the HL880, which in feel and looks is very close to the vintage items. The chrome cases go very well in the Dino. At least one would have a clock that works.

I am not sure what I will do with this one, as I need the Rally Master pair, but I passed up the chance to buy a new one some forty years ago and always regretted it. So when this new one turned up at a Tag-Heuer store (the company produced a limited “re-edition” run a few years ago), I had to get it.

It looks so good I had to take a photograph.

I have the Rally Master set in my Stratos and I kind of like the look of a set with some age on it. Gives it a little more character.

I would too, Racerboy, but the vintage sets are hard to find. And expensive! Could you post a photo, when convenient, of the Rally Master in the Stratos?

The values are different according to the version, with the earlier (12-3-6-9 Mastertime, and 3 button Monte Carlo late 1950's to early 1960's) being more valuable than the later ones (2 button Monte Carlo) which would be period correct for a Dino. The Dino Competizione came with a set! A great site for learning about the various versions is:

l didn't realize you have the full-blown competition interior, Racerboy9. Cool. l love the labels. (Off topic - can you give me Udo Sparwald's email address? The one on his webpage is incomplete. I need to get dampers. )

Thanks, Rob. A great site for Heuer clocks. And a good photo, too. I wonder if Jim G. has kept the clocks.

Fantastic, Jim. That really encourages me to install a Rally Master set in the Dino.

    Best,

The Heuer mounting plate is slightly taller than the original blanking plate and also the opening in the dash, so the Heuer plate cannot be attached directly to the blanking plate and must also be held some distance from the dash surface to allow for its mounting screws.

I decided to make a new blanking plate from wood with the same length as the original, but a bit taller (and of course thicker) so I may screw the Heuer mounting plate directly on it. I plan to cover this with mouse fur, which may not be as easy as the corners will probably require stitching. I will also have to buy a whole square meter of mouse fur, which seems the minimum quantity.

Looking at the custom wood and gauge dash in the Beverly Hills car, I am keeping the original blanking plate so I may be a hasty retreat if criticized!

I ordered the minimum quantity of mousefur from Superformance to cover the new radio blanking plate I am making for the Heuers. What a huge package arrived! They were careful not to crease the material.

I hope never to have to recover the dash of either the Dino or the Stratos, but will have to find some use for the excess mousefur.

The Rallymaster set was delivered to Hong Kong, so I was able to pick it up when I visited this week. I had already made a wood blanking plate, so I only needed to drill holes to mount the Rallymaster and then cover the blanking plate with mousefur. The clocks look good, I think, and go nicely in the Dino’s interior.

In this digital age, it is so nice to slip on old-fashioned string-back gloves, click on an analog stopwatch. and take an old sports car for an early morning run.

    My best to all.
