...okay...I've been watching F1 for about 3 seasons now. My first "real," serious race-watching experience was Monaco in 2003 or 2004 - whichever one that was during a MS/Ferrari *dominating* season, but the race was won by a Renault (Trulli, maybe?). Anyway. Fast-forward to this season.

There are two teams that I can't seem to get straight - the Red Bulls. There's "Red Bull Ferrari", which I *think* is the old Sauber team, right? And then there's Scuderia Toro Rosso - Scott Speed and Liuzzi - that's the former Mindardi-Cosworth team, correct?

Now...last night during practice, the commentators were talking about STR's deal where they can run V10s from last year. What does RBR Ferrari run? A 248 or the V10 from the F2005 (b/c the Saubers used to run 1-year-old Ferrari technology, right?)?

Finally - how can Red Bull have 2 teams? It seems like the same thing as if there were "Scuderia Ferrari" and "Scuderia Rosso Corsa" (or "Scuderia Red and White Cigarette Box").... Just doesn't seem "right."

Can someone shed a little light, and let me know if my assumptions about the drivers/engine configurations are correct? I appreciate it very much...

    1) Red Bull Ferrari, former Jaguar team. Runs their own chassis, and the Ferrari V8. 2nd year in F1

    2) Scuderia Toro Rossa, former Minardi team. Runs their own* chassis, and the detuned Cosworth V10 that Minardi had last year. They are allowed to run that engine because at the time the 2006 regulations were written, the team was still Minardi and chronically underfunded. This is their first year in F1

The teams are run as separate operations. Every team must build their own chassis, although they are allowed to buy engines from engine manufacturers.

    * There are those who claim the 2006 STR chassis bears an amazing resemblance to the 2005 Red Bull chassis. Surely this must be coincidence, as the chassis passed scrutineering ;)

Firstly, Red Bull Racing used to be Jaguar, nee Stewart, not Sauber. BMW bought Sauber.

Red Bull have customer Ferrari engines, the same kind fitted to the F248.

Minardi were the only team who asked to use the rev limited V10s, and since they became STR they were allowed to keep these engines.

Finally, why can't the same person own two teams? Flavio used to run both Ligier and Benetton back in the mid 1990s. McLaren are considering creating a B-team too.

Much like the Sauber that looked just like a Ferrari?
