I bought a 308 from web page ad from California and had it shipped to me in Illinois. It runs and drives fine, but I am finding it needs a bit of work, and it is not completely stock. It is a late 1977 308 GTB steel body. VIN 22951. Didn't come with door keys, a spare tire, jack, lug wrench, choke cable or a stock steering wheel and the paint is a quick job with over spray and some small rust bubbles. :-( I am in the process of making it more reliable, and fixing things as I go. As a friend once said "it is a 15 foot car, it looks perfect at 15 feet away"

I finally have some money to toss at it, and with the help of the group here I plan on doing it right. That being said, I would like to find a local guy to look at it, do the work that I cant or don't want to try.

Is there anyone local to the Chicago land area?

    Thanks

    Eric

    Welcome to F-Chat!

Looks decent enough in the pix - a little weird......BUT it's a GTB!! but just how
much have you set aside for service? I'm
sure you're aware these cars can be VERY expensive to 'improve'. Has it had a
belt/tensioner change recently? Water pump? New main filler hose and other
critical gas lines? That's the stuff you should look at FIRST. I'm into my own
328 GTS about $27k in service but I learned a LOT along the way - like don't buy a car
that needs $27k in service :)
Do tell all: VIN, how much you paid for it, history, miles, etc. - we LOVE that
    sorta stuff up front :D

    Good luck and keep posting.

[edit] Maybe cross post to the Chicago section to find an F-wrench.... Also, what's
with the antenna thingy on the roof? It's also kind of a Euro/US frankenstein though...

Hi, Your yellow 308 looks good in pictures though. I like the antenna and and the 3rd brake light modifications (if that's is it).

Welcome! I'd Love to own a yellow GTB to sit next to my QV. +1 with Jedi, if you don't have paperwork showing a belt and bearing service in the last 3-4 years, I would do it before I put another 100 miles on the car, same goes for the fuel lines, we loose alot of carb cars due to engine fires from leaking fuel lines. DON'T just take the previous owners word either! NO RECIEPTS = Change it out. If you like to "tinker" on your cars you will find great satisfaction in working on a 308, these guys are REALLY great at helping you out if you need it. The best advice I recieved was "don't get in a hurry" Welcome again! Kim

Congrats! I have a bright silver GTB and it too is stunning! Well done.

You will hear a lot of comments regarding maintenance and they are probably all valid, if a little freightening. ( Remember 'maintenance' is not the same thing as 'repairs'. Maintenance is what we do to minimize repairs. ) The trick I have found is to follow the maintenance schedule as outlined by Ferrari and/or by ownership best practices, and use that to minimize the 'worry-factor'. That being said; no matter how much we maintain our cars, they are still old cars and poo happens. And drive the wheels off of it. They were designed for it! My 308GTB is a carbed, dry sump, Euro car. When on the track, driven at the driver's limit (The driver's limit was easily reached. The car's was not.), the coolant and oil temperatures never went above normal even driven at WOT at every opportunity. These cars were designed to be driven hard, maintained well and enjoyed to the extreme. There's a reason they're called 'exotics'.

Again, congratulations and welcome to the tiny community of Ferrari owners!

I have noticed the engine is tough, the engine tossed the only thin rubber band like belt it has that drives the water pump and alternator and I didn't notice till the temp gauge went a little higher than I have noticed. I watch gauges in this car like a hawk. I pulled over right away and had it towed home. it was a challenge to find a new belt, but then I found one zip tied to a bar in the trunk. Since then my radiator developed a pin hole leak, and sprayed on the battery. I asked my network of car friends and they pointed me to a radiator only shop that did great job, took it apart, blasted all the paint and dirt off, soaked it to get any sludge out of it, then put it back together and painted it for $300. When I asked a dealer they quoted me $3,000 for a new one. I am thinking of taking in the 2 heater cores to have them done.

I am worried about valve train noise, or that is what i think it is. Sounds like a loose rocker or something. I am also worried about a few other things too, like mine pops around sounds like popcorn. When I first got it the rear exhaust manifold got read hot. One of the car friends suggested the cam was a tooth off. After correcting that the car ran better and had more pep to it. I cant go WOT anymore, as my clutch slips when I go past 1/4 to 1/2 throttle. I am looking for a manual or adjustment steps.

You've got a starting point. Post some engine pics from above and below. It sounds like you should go through it very thoroughly. I'm sure you're anxious to drive it, but you'll have a lot more fun, and be safer if you take pause now to sort her out. Congrat's again your new Ferrari! :)
