328, so one cat. Past experience makes me wonder if my thermocouple or cat ecu is working right. Finally got my ignition wires redone by Dave Helms(thanks Dave!) and put them in and went out for test drive. Seems to be running great, took a short drive but got up to operating oil temp and did some spirited driving. On finishing seemed a bit more crackly than usual in the exhaust/cat area.

Used the laser temp gauge to measure cat, about 500 degrees one minute after shut done. Seem about right? I believe with my search its about 900 when the slow down light comes on, correct?

I did confirm looking at the spec manual 900 causes blinking so I assume well under that is just fine. Just seemed to be a bit more crackling back there on shut down than usual. Maybe I'm being paranoid? When I had a bank go down awhile ago due to failed rotor the cat got cherry red, not seeing that at all this time.

One question is how long would it take an extra hot cat to cool to 500 degrees from dangerous levels? Sorry, just a bit paranoid after my ignition wire troubles...

I haven't seen much data on normal catalytic converter temperatures, so I thought I'd share the following plot of cat thermocouple temperatures recorded during a drive today in my 328. I recorded this using an initial version of a microprocessor-based replacement I'm working on for the existing cat ECU. Elapsed drive time was about 1 hour, with fairly spirited driving (high RPM on windy roads). Outside air temperatures were about 65 deg. F.

An interesting thing is that the cat temperatures maxed out early in the drive (at 1000 seconds). before I was really winding the car out. I wonder if fuel-burn efficiency (and thus less raw fuel going into the cat) improved over time as the full system warmed up throughout the drive.
