Normal nuts for cam drive pulleys

    I see Superformance have started making proper hexagonal nuts for the cam drive pulleys, (part no 30815105 half way down this page) :

    Personally I think this is great. The weird and expensive tool to fit the wierd and expensive castellated nuts is now no longer needed to do the bearings behind these pulleys. Removing the castellated nuts is usually destroys them, so you may as well drill/split them anyway. The normal hexagon nut will allow a high tightening torque to be applied easily.

    No affiliation and so on. Just thought this would useful information..

    looks like all they did was cut flats out of the original ring nut making it hex. not a bad idea, FYI; don't try and use a normal hex nut as the ring nut is a castle nut that has the locking flange to keep it from vibrating loose.

    At 15+ British Pounds it's not any cheaper than the "proper" drop gear nut ($30.00). Having said that I don't actually know the price of the genuine cam gear nuts. Just guessing they're similar in price to the drop gear item. But, of course, you still need to buy, make, borrow or rent the funky socket if using the proper nut.

    Edit: re-read your post. I guess you're saying it is a genuine nut that has been cut to a hex shape. That's cool then, if it still has the locking collar (kind of hard to tell from the photo). I'd much rather have that then have to buy another socket.

    I bought a few of the original nuts from Ferrari UK last year about $7 a piece. Having said that, one of the nuts came loose after 700 miles after a rebuild, after being correctly torqued, damaged the shaft, cam drive pulley and mangled the woodruff, luckily didn't result in valves hitting pistons.

    Engine is out being sorted at the moment, I can guarantee no matter what nut I put back on they will be aided by loctite this time.

    This cam nut removal tool wouldn't happen to be the same size as the transfer gear nut tool would it??

    If not, what size is used to call it out??

    No, the transmission input shaft ring nut (FR102 = 45mm) is quite a bit larger than the cam drive sprocket ring nut (although Baum doesn't give the size for the "TIMING BELT SPROCKET GROOVE NUT SOCKET"). The ring nut size is usually specified as the largest physical OD of the ring nut:

    The cam drive ring nut tool is BAUM FR104 - Timing Drive Nut. IIRC, it is 26mm
