link: Ferry service considered for lake snippet: "...Schild is proposing to start out with one ferry, which will dock near Sunset Point on the Northshore and in the West End Canal on the Southshore. The ferry he currently has an option to buy can handle 149 passengers each crossing. This includes 15 seats on the executive level...He is currently looking at running bus routes to Abita Springs on Louisiana Highway 59, to Covington U.S. Highway 190 and to Covington on Louisiana Highway 22. On the Southshore, he is looking into buses to take passengers to the central business district, Loyola, Tulane and to Ocshner Hospital..." For several months I used the RTA's commuter service and while I saved a decent amount of money I found the added hassle, stress of catching the "last bus home", and add'l time to the overall commute to not be worth the savings. That said, I did find the time on the bus to be useful, e.g. read the paper.
Me, no way. I didn't notice the cost of each trip, but I would imagine you could buy a toyota yaris that gets 35mpg and still come out ahead. Figuring 8 dollars a day in gas (2 ways) and 8 dollars a day in car payment on a 12 thousand dollar car (less when you figure you can sell it at the end). Plus, the luxury of not being trapped in someone elses schedule is priceless.
"Round Trip Daily Pass - $30.00 Weekly Pass - $135.00 Monthly Pass - $500.00 Executive Level Seating (monthly) - $700.00" per: http://www.swiftferries.com/ link in article. IIRC the RTA service I used was ~ $60 a month though this was between da East & CBD, not Northshore.
I'll look for the spreadsheet I did when I was considering the RTA service. I took into account depreciation and maintenance costs per mile, both what I thought was my "actual" and compared with the IRS mileage rate, and of course parking. Ironically the RTA portion of the trip was ~ 9 miles one way and I still had a ~ 25 mile drive from bus stop to home. However, time-wise the bus stop was roughly the half-way point due to congestion b/w bus stop and CBD.
I don't spend that driving back and forth to Gulfport everyday. What are they smoking? Now that I car pool with two other guys , I spend about 80 bucks a month on fuel
I spend 80 a week in gas from mandeville to s. shore, but I drive the least aerodynamic SUV on the road. If I wanted to get sensible with my commute, I would buy a hybrid camry or the aforementioned yaris, not be at the mercy of mass transportation. I do think it has it's place, but at those rates, cannot imagine it working. Figuring that most people using mass transit are making 50 thousand or less every year, 500-700 dollars per month is 25% of their after tax income.
I wouldn't do it and I wouldn't want a ferry docked in Mandeville. The only place they could do it that I can think of is the barge slips at the old pre-stress facility behind sunset point. The Copeland's own that last I heard. Me and a few people were talking about trying to develop that into nice homes or condos with boat slips but were told the Copeland's had no intentions of doing anything with it I guess this is why. They need to give some attention to the marina they own that has fallen apart and less to docking a ferry here.
yeah, I always figured they were holding the concrete plant waiting for a third causeway span to be built so they could put it back into operation. Regarding the slips next to it at mariners village, I dont think the boats can even get out into the lake anymore, what a freaking waste. Again, I think they want that land to also be necessary ($$$) to put another span in so they can quit being slum property managers.
I really like the concept, and will probably take the trip with the kids one weekend just to say we did it. For a daily alternative, I think it's way overpriced. I car pool with 3 co-workers, so it costs me less than $100 a month for the commute. When I drove myself every day, the cost was roughly $250 a month.
I can't believe that they think this will work. They must have plans to get the government to subsidize this that they are not revealing yet.
Ahhhh, a very likely truth. I can see it now- because there are few low income jobs in mandeville, to allow employment provisions for the residents of the new subsidized house and appartment influx, we will litter our shores with public transit to the big city at the expense of the residents.
I don't see Mandeville letting it happen. The Copeland's wanted to build homes there with a dock for his racing boats and a helipad and it was shot down. I think this would cause too much work to be needed by the city/state for it to work. Monroe street would have to be wider, all the streets feeding it would have a lot of traffic. There would be a lot of noise and other impacts on the homes there. I would support it if we could put the post-katrina transplants on it, send it over, and not let it back. <flame suit on> lol
Probably so, but at least it has still looked like Mandeville and Covington then. The amount of buildings that have been built and the trees that have been cut down lately is ridiculous. Now we have no trees and empty buildings and projects put on hold that are becoming places for criminals to hang out. I wish we could take pre-stress and chisel out the concrete and plant trees but I know that can't happen but would could at least put some nice homes there with green space and trees. Not a parking lot, buildings and a giant boat.
I got a advertisement in the mail from them over the weekend. I hope this thing doesn't get off the ground. Even if it does with the prices they have planned it won't last 3 months
http://www.nola.com/business/index.ssf/2010/07/proposed_lake_pontchartrain_fe.html I'll drive you across the Twin Span for $10/day! Ticket Schedule per http://www.swiftferries.com/: Image Unavailable, Please Login
40 minutes to make a 19 minute drive and then be on someone else's schedule, the only way they will make it past 3 months is if Barry gives them a load of "stimulus" money to subsidize this

Novel idea that will come and be gone in a month. No matter the price of fuel, we are not yet willing to give up our freedoms of having our own ride. We should but we won't and I include myself in this statement.
I wish this would just go away. I would like to know if the Copeland's have done anything for the Mariner's Village marina that was falling apart. They told them they are not allowed to do anything with any property in the estate, that includes where they are leasing the land to the ferry guy. I guess they can only do something if it makes them money. I know more than a few people who will not ride it because they don't want to support having that thing here and others that don't want to be dropped of on the southshore with no car.
They did. They fenced a large portion of it, re-built the docks, and most importantly in relation to this issue- already dredged the canal (the manatee must not have noticed)... Take a look at this ad I saw on CL just today http://neworleans.craigslist.org/boa/2326504701.html
That is good to hear. I had talked to some guys a while back that were involved with suing the copeland's over the marina upkeep. Hadn't heard any updates.
