Northwest Airlines mechanics and cleaners on strike, and the airline had incidents of blown tires and smoke in the cockpit today. Should be interesting, and a HUGE blow to an already frigle airline.

I imagine there will be a lot of whining about how will the families survive once they strike the company out of business.

I personally respect a company that serves my needs at a fair price and turns a profit. Most of my commercial flights are on Southwest :)

Southwest is just as good as the "full-service" carriers, maybe better in terms of the actual product. AirTran, JetBlue are rising stars. What is your home airport?

I saw on CNN they rather see the airline go under before giving in. Yeah, what a way to put yourself out of a job in an industry that is losing jobs, not adding (so they'll have a hard time finding a similar job within the industry).

There's a side of me that hopes this puts NW out of business, just so the damn Unions lose their jobs. I have an idea, my company is on shaky ground, so in order to stay employed, I'm going to do something that will cripple it.

    Duh.

I think it's great that NW had contingency plans in place that included flying a reduced schedule that grounded 30 planes and hiring and training REPLACEMENT mechanics before it happened. I'm pretty close to this industry for various reasons, and the 'problems' that have been publicized are largely propoganda promoted by the Union itself. Do you think the airline doesn't have issues on a normal day? Did the smoke in the cockpit or the blown tire occur because somebody had the day off? I doubt it.

Maybe it'll cut down on the Airbus factor, too. Yes, I know there are Americans building them but it'd sure be nice if those Americans' were building Boeing jets.

Jeez, not worth the risk flying on that airline at the moment. If anyone disagrees then be my guest.

I fly from Detroit to Montreal every 3rd weekend to visit my daughter. I have flights with NW booked through December. I am watching what transpires with great interest.
