I'm not sure how many had the rear panel, although it wasn't uncommon, and I think it could have been done at the factory or in the USA. I know this because you could buy the pat from the factory in the early days. But wow, this guy really wanted a 25th Anniversary!
I know this is an old thread, but I looked for more of the story about how and why these were just left to rot. Can anyone help steer me in the right direction, please? 30 minutes of Google, and I could not find more usable information. These stories fascinate me, and are one of my few hobbies that I actually enjoy.
Also, what happened to this haul of three? There was a blue LP400, a red LP400S and this black car. In the US I thought? Image Unavailable, Please Login
Those two Countach were found in two different outdoor garages, I heard. I'm not sure who had owned and left the white QV to rot. The red LP400S "Anniversario" #1121008 was bought by a man from New York in the mid or late 80s. He used to own the LP400 #1120004 and S-Turbo-Wallaced it. He sold 0004 and bought 1008 that he bastardized the same way... but this time wanted that newer look of the Anniversario version. Why were they forgotten? Ha, just like any other long-lost cars found decades later... You wouldn't believe all the kind of stories I found. It goes from lack of budget to keep them in driving condition, broken engine and no care to repair it, death of the owner, unclaimed family inheritance, stolen cars, illegal cars that couldn't be registered anymore, fake or lost VIN... For those two Countach, I couldn't find the exact reason(s). They're in the shadow, being restored very discreetly. The black one is a LP400 too, modified to S spec by Executive Coachcraft in California (Mardikian / Giacobone) and appeard in the movie Parasite in 1982. Not sure about the VIN yet, but I can tell it is a low one from 1974 - 1975. The Thaiti Blu LP400 was also seen on TV, in an episode of 'Max Monroe: Loose Cannon' in 1990. Its VIN should be #1120290. And guess what? The red LP400S is the one being unloaded from the boat at the beginning of the movie Rain Man! I think that barn was full of movie cars... That's interesting. I wonder then if that blue Ferrari 400i in front of the black LP400 is the car driven by Charlie Babbit (Tom Cruise's character) in Rain Man? Although it looks to have later 412 wheels. Who knows??
I may be off message, but I'd keep the turbo countach, simply for its rarity and historic value even "if it was a turn in a wrong direction". I wonder if the later DD engine was better able to handle turbos? Yes, I still dream of a turbo countach, even if it were more fragile..
