Yes, you and I agree. Her car, not having all Ferrari parts, would be a replica. If it was all Ferrari parts and built like a GTO it would be a recreation. If it had a Ferrari engine and Datsun frame it's still a replica. Of course, if the frame and engine were Ferrari, and the body made of steel or aluminum like the originals, there's a point where there's enough 'Ferrari' in it to be a recreation....but I'm not drawing that line. My Lotus has an aftermarket water pump, ignition, master cylinder...and it's still a Lotus.

I like Beck which are replicas also. This vette conversion is done pretty well. I generally don't have issue with kit cars as long as it's still tasteful and has performance to back it up. I doubt he is the type that tells ppl he drives a Ferrari. Either way, you gotta feel back for his divorce sale. It's obvious it's his baby for 15 yrs. I admire people's dedication to a car. There are rich people who don't know how to drive one and just own one because they could (no one on this board of course). And there are those who can't afford one and spend their time making what they have into what they dream to drive. Which one is the poseur?

    food for thought

    Definitely food for thought.

Did he really say that? Do we have a reference to this? Very curious.

That's been quoted everywhere but I've never seen the source. Let's remember Ferrari didn't build the bodies, and they had lots of design help from outside sources. They still do, in fact I'm unclear how much input the factory ever had/has in body design.

A Ferrari is an engine and a concept; it's a tribute that they have not violated that concept even today with the safty/emissions concerns.

I was not aware that the 400-series cars and the Daytonas were that similar. Do you have any more information on the above "conversion" you mention? It certainly seems like a more affordable way to have a "Daytona" that's still a Ferrari, but not a true Daytona.

Here we go again. . .

    Purist or Poseur?

--buy a ferrari jacket? purist (hey, you love the marque)
--wear the ferrari jacket to the local concours? poseur (hey, what're you trying to prove?)

--love every ferrari ever made? purist
--love the 360 / Enzo, don't know much about the rest? poseur!

--can't afford a 308gt4, but dream of owning a Fiat 1500 Cabriolet? Know what one is? PURIST
--dream of owning a Murcie AND an Enzo? POSEUR

--search e-bay for that "perfect" 308gt4, even though you're broke and your wife would kill your dumba$$? purist, of course
--stop for a second to wonder what it would be like to rumble around in a McBurnie 250gto or Daytona V-8 replica? POSEUR (how DARE you?)

--love vintage 250 PF cab's so much that you own at least 6 die-cast models of them, and polish them daily? PURIST, for sure
--love vintage 250 PF cab's so much that you think about building one, a la "ferris bueller", but can't afford a ferrari V-12? POSEUR (what a freakin' criminal)

--walk into the Vegas ferrari dealership with a wad of cash and demand a new ferrari? PURIST (hey, he didn't demand no kitcar!)
--recognize that some 355 / daytona replicas are pretty good and are actually built by people who love ferraris? POSEUR

--believe that mattel die-cast is "good enough" for poor folk? purist
--believe that people should just be able to drive whatever the heck they feel like, no matter what other people say? POSEUR

Why do so many people on FerrariChat care so much that some idiot is able to pick up stooopid women, and impress his stooopid friends with his stooopid countach kitcar?

The black Ferrari Daytona Spyder in Miami Vice was also a replica built on a Corvette (I think). Does that help legitimize this?

They actually had more than one car for the show. However those were rather basic replicas. Many things were wrong (e.g. Mirrors) and they had no interior work done. That's why the in car shots always only show the character's heads.

One of my fav scenes is the night shot, camera mounted outside the rims and "In the air tonight" playing. They stop at a phone booth, no music playing and you can hear the rattling Vette sounds as the car comes to a stop. Hilarious.

Regardless that show did probably more good to Ferrari's image in the States than all the concours combined. Same is true for "Magnum PI" (real series of 308s). Which goes to show that to the public the whole real vs replica discussion is somewhat academic.
