count me in too Erik, i still want a carb 512 Boxer and a Dino 308GT4.
i like the the 70s and 80s ferraris too, they are my favorites. in fact the 308 gtb is my all time favorite car, with the lamborghini lp400 a close second. both in non-red colors, of course. i like them not because of their easier maintenance (since i can barely change oil), but because of their style and character. i like it when you have to learn to drive a car. turn the key and go is good for daily driver stuff on cold crappy weather days. someone said something about old american muscle (specifically referring to a boss mustang) being hard to drive, well for me that's the fun of owning an older car. i'm only 28 but these older cars are my favorites. i had a new 2004 s2000, but i didn't like it all, sold it in 6 weeks. too luxurious and sensible and quiet. the original was better. i am looking for a convertible ferrari that i would like to use as a regular driver and would like a mondial qv cab. those black bumpers and 14" wheels just look right. maybe i'm coocoo for coco puffs, but that's the way i like 'em. john
Carbed 308 GTB for me next, then a 512 BB. Not planning on ever selling any of them. Unless the wife forces me to get her an F40 first...
I'm with you Erik. Love the 70s-80s look and HATE the new rounded off or triangular look. I just think they're UGLY cars nowadays. That new Z? GAG.
It all started during Mrs. Dungeon's second-period Alegbra class didn't it? (For some of you, it may have been Mrs. Pruneface's third-period English class.) The endless droning over (at the time) meaningless crap in a classroom with the heat turned up to the point where you could barely breath the air. Rampant and endless daydreaming was our only hope for survival. While some fantasized about girls, most of us were too ignorant about the subject matter to maintain a decent fantasy. Those pictures in Playboy didn't look like anything we knew. No, most of us hid a copy of Hot Rod under our books. The weirdos would substitute a copy of Cycle or Road and Track. Our lecture notes consisted of page after page of car doodles. I was heavy into flames (perphaps because the classroom was so damn hot?). The fact that most of us couldn't draw didn't deter anybody. Just like a baby duck fixating on its Momma for the first time, car guys imprint our brains between the ages of 13 to 17. (Hormones take over after that.) This explains, of course, why muscle cars are so hot today. Those 15-year old pimple faces are now 55 and have the money to buy that Hemi that they dreamed about a long time ago in Mrs. Dungeon's class. Dr "Slip, sliding, away" Who
But Erik, that was only 15 years ago in your case. Geeze Louise, 1990 may not have been the best year for cars, but they had better stuff than a bunch of crummy "drive granny to church" cars!
I must admit, I'm a dinosaur in dude's clothing. Then again, I kind of dress like a dinosaur as well. I guess that makes me... What does that make me?
"a secretary can drive one fast" Truly "fast" is hard, IMO, for all cars of all eras. I don't think it's any easier to extract max performance from a new car, as opposed to the old cars. As for the 70s and 80s, to my eye the Daytona and Boxer have a lasting elegance.
You can count me in too. I think we like these cars because they're raw. Raw and beautiful in styling and performance. The performace is good enough, newer cars may kill them, but do you really need to do 200mph on the street?. This era was the start of the super car. 70's The Ferrari 365 series/bb 512 boxer, 308, daytona, Lamborghini Muira, 80's the Testarossa, Countach, still 308 then 328 (where styling begins to turn first with the testarossa then the beloved 308), then the late 80's came and styling for these cars really turn and to become bland in comparison. The 348 was bland in styling compared to what ferrari used to put out The dino series was turned into a mini testarossa. Remember when the first cars of the nineties came out, and you were like Wow? Look at that car! If you look at those same cars now, they look like junk. I remember when I first saw a 300zx (the new generation) and I loved it. I look at one now and think how fast the styling has died. The mistu 3000gt and the Dodge stealth were like that too for another example. Those cars look like big pieces of junk now. So the reason I think why a lot of people like the 70's cars I think, is rebellion to the new computer controlled crap that costs a fortune to maintain that manufactures put out now. And also the fact that they really are fun cars, and that they are what enabled the super car of today.
I have seen a very well driven 308 GTSi put better lap times than a 360 driven by an average driver. HP does make up for lack of talent...
That about sums it up, maybe re living adolescent fantasys, the Ferrari thing for me was started by my dad, he was always crazy about them but never owned one, he bought me a diecast green 275GTB when I was 4 or 5 and I thought it was the coolest looking car ever and of course I bombarded him with questions about them. Now if I could only see Wile E Coyote catch the Roadrunner once and eat him my life would be complete now.
I have had the lucky experience of driving to Mas Du Clos in my friends 275GTB 2cam It was truly an experience especially with my good friend pushing me to drive faster and faster, we were late for a Gala dinner. Its a good life if you don,t take it too seriously. TWOTOOMANY
