I just happened to be browsing through the Ferrari F355 Owners Manual and found a section dealing with timing belt inspection and replacement. It states that, "belts should be inspected every 10,000 km" and "belts should be replaced every 60,000 km."

Now I know very well that this issue has been discussed to death here, but what am I missing? I'm certain that someone is going to point out an obvious flaw to my observation and I'm going to feel really dumb, but I couldn't resist the temptation. Have at it...

It's all about the Benjamins baby, all about the Benjamins.

Think about it. Why would a brand spanking new timing by need to be inspected every 6200miles/10000km?

Makes sense I guess. But even calculating kilometers to miles, it seems that replacement should be every 40,000 miles or so, right? No mention of time vs. miles driven in the manual however.

I'd like to know how they propose to do the 'inspection'? Take the engine out, take the covers off, look at belts, yup they look good, put the engine back in? :D

It probably could be done by using a fiber optic scope and indexing the engine (since there are small openings in the covers).

It's always a good idea to change your hamster every belt service too....

If not properly serviced...they can cause a big blow up!

Follow the manual. i don't think belt changes need to be done every 4 years, unless you want to track the car, then I would change belts regulary. Thats my opinion.

OK, that stung a little. I knew putting that out there would cause some consternation, but not trusting me anymore? Come on guys. I promise to thoroughly think through my future posts before hitting the, "submit," button. Can I come back in now???

There was a service bulletin sent out in 1994 that read something to the tune of "all V8 engined need the timing belts changed every 3 years or 30,000km, whichever comes first"

I can understand that a belt needs to be changed every so many thousand miles because it is working for a living.

But what I don't understand is why it has to be changed every so many years. My point is this, the manufacturer makes the belt, it sits on the shelf before distribution. Then it gets distributed to warehouses all over the world and sits on a shelf. Then it goes to dealerships or distributors and sits on a shelf. So the belt could be a couple of years old before it is fitted.

So if a car does 20000 miles in 10 years why should the belt be replaced before it has actually worked for the given number of miles.

If a belt deteriorates with time why doesn't a belt come with a production date stamped on it ?

    Just a point to ponder.

    Happy belt changing.

    Good point.

And while we're at it, given all the other upgraded parts available, why isn't there a "better" belt being produced by someone, which doesn't need to be changed for 10 years or so?

'coz the other ones will last for ****** years anyway so really no point in making an aftermarket replacement. Quick question - who makes the belts, is a similar spec on other cars (albeit probably shorter) and what interval do they use. Just wondering as we seem to be in a belt interval thread anyway ............. :O

Ok. I'll re-word it. A belt which has a RECOMMENDED replacement every ten years or so.
Instead of (here at least) every three.

That way when you go to sell the car the potential buyer doesn't say
"That belt was supposed to be replaced x years ago, therefore I'm only going to offer you..." etc.

I guess what I'm saying is that no one replaces the belt every three years because they genuinely think it's going to fail and the engine will blow up, they do it so there isn't a hole in the service records. Don't they?

    :)
