Is that a legitimate argument? Do cars loose their claim on a chassisnumber when they spend an X amount of time being rebuilt?

The judge is right imo. There is no dispute on ownership. Both parties own a certain car and for both parties, their ownership is legitimate and valid. Question is which of the parties own this particular car, but that question is indeed a question to the identity of the car, and that is not a legal matter, but a historic or technical matter.

Like most of these type of arguments, it's the FUTURE that is the important thing. The judge thinks the debate between the 2 Jaguars is stupid, but what will happen in 20 years when one or the other of those cars comes up for auction? If ONE of them was officially decreed to be THE car, then it's value would no doubt be well above the other. Without some sort of official determination, it's like 2 kids arguing on a playground. Nothing ever gets settled. I still go by my own standard: Numbers rule. Without any serial numbers, you must have a proven, documentable trail of provenance. Without either, it's a mongrel.
