As a car guy I feel stupid posting this but I need help with my private used car sale. Quick background, I was selling my wife's A4 about 2 years ago to a woman who tried to buy the car with a fake bank check. I questioned the check, told her I want to drive to a local branch to verify it and she got spooked and ran. So now I'm selling another car and want to avoid the same thing. Am I better off going with a wire transfer and once the money hits my account signing the paperwork??? I feel like such a girl here...

Never accept a "personal" cashier's check. Insist that the buyer get a loan through a well-known lender and have the sales transaction executed through your bank. A cash buyer can pay off this loan tomorrow if he wants.

I've probably sold 20 cars to private parties. I tell the people on the phone, before they even look at the car, that we need to plan to settle up at their bank. That way, there's no question whether the funds are available. I get the money, then immediately deposit in to my bank. I have not had any problems. When I sold my f-car, the money was wired into my accout while I sat in the office of one of the VP's of our bank.

I think I'm going with the wire transfer to ease my fears of getting screwed again. The woman who passed the bad check to me on the Audi had a really nice looking Check from Chase.......
