Is anyone familiar with the city? I could really use some 411 on living there. I'm working there this summer, but I still havent found a place to live. It seems all the apartments out there are in community type arrangements, which we dont have here in the northeast. Im a bit concerned about the type of people living in said communities. The last thing i want to do is accidentally move into a retirement oriented community.
Ideally a loft or studio is what im looking for (still want the 'college dormroom' feeling). It might be nice to be near Kirkland AFB/Sandia in the southeast part of the city, which might let me bike to work instead of taking the car out west (i also hear mountain biking is good there).

You might want to post this in the Regional Area for New Mexico (Nevada, Arizona and New Mexico).

I can't help you with Albuquerque much, but Santa Fe I'm good at. Just 60 miles away, it is a great haven for food, art and music. Spend some weekends over there if possible. Also don't miss Los Alamos, a neat little town where they brought all the US and foreign brain trusts in to develop the nuclear bomb in the early 40's. Still has one of the highest concentrations of MENSA brainaics anywhere. The drive from Santa Fe to Taos is fun winding roads along a river, and the 85 mile enchanted circle out of Taos takes in Angel Fire, Eagles Nest and Red River.
    In Santa Fe don't miss-
Pasquals and Tia Sofia for great breakfast.
    The Shed for good mexican.
Bistro 315 , Inn of the Annastasi, The Compound, Geronimo's and whatever this year's new hot restaurants are.
Vannessi's for a drink and sing along with Doug Montgomery a great piano player/crooner.
Lots of smaller less expensive dives there with a little research, including Bobcat Bites, and old roadhouse off of I25 and the old Las Vegas (NM) highway for a world class green chile cheeseburger.
Canyon road has a great artist colony, and just watching the world walk by in the square is an experience.
Enjoy your time in New Mexico, it's a different atmosphere than most areas of the US.

Gawd, don't get a place in southeast near the base...
you'll be making the same mistake i made way back in 1988:

    * moved to ABQ(Albuquerque, btw, on the spelling),
was gonna do contract work in 'puters to DOE & Air
    Force on Sandia.

    * figured why not grab a place right by the base,
so snagged an apt. on Wyoming, not far outside
    the base.

    * BIG mistake. All the stuff anywhere -near- the
base is either low rent or an open invitation to
    the burglars.

    * so, moved out el quicko, worked out better.

    * ABQ is laid out in quadrants separated by I-40
    north-south, and I-25 east-west. Anything on the
base is SE. SW then wasn't very nice. Stay away from these.
Go with sumpin' north of I-40 in NE(lots of apts
and houses to rent), or the NW quadrant(which
has the worst commute, cuz you've gotta deal
with 2 interstates, plus the interchange).

    * I ended up in two places in NE quadrant, worked
    well.

    * If you need somewhere cheap to land till you
figure it all out, check out the Warren Apts at
Lousiana & I-40. Nuthin' fancy, but they used to
do fairly short rentals, and you can't beat the
location for accessability to the base and the
    nicer parts of ABQ.

    * Good luck, i was there 1.5 yrs, didn't really fit
my interests, so i got out as quickly as i could.

Go see Mike Houx at Sandia BMW (he owns the place). He is a Ferrari ( well, a Dino owner, anyway) owner and can probably help you out. I ran into Mike at the FCA event in Dallas. He had driven his very nice Dino in from New Mexico. He is a very nice guy and I am sure would give you some advice on your request.

You can use my name if you like. I traded a lot with them when I was GM of Broncho BMW in Odessa, Texas.
