Notebook selection ideas?

Im back in school, finishing my BS and pursuing a MS at Embry-Riddle.

i have an idea to buy this Samsung notebook for $379.99,
add more of the same memory it comes with for $19.99
and replace the HDD with a Samsung SSD for $119.99

Ill post links, but I see this a great way to build a decent fast "student" Notebook For school.

Anyone have any thoughts / ideas i would love to read them before I order all this stuff.

I'm sure for your purposes, that would be just dandy for cheap. Personally,
if I wanted to save some money, I would even skip the upgrades. Yeah, SSD
is uber-fast and more RAM is always a good thing. But I'm sure stock out of
the box it will be just fine for school work.

Definitely interested in hearing how the Samsung is. I've heard the screens on the Samsungs have one of the better viewing angles.

 

Will you only go for Samsung? Other brands offer perhaps the same or better features than the samsung you saw and even better price. check at best www.bestbuy.com for their daily deals as well as www.frys.com. Practically you dont need those updates in the HDD as the standard HDD capacity is already big for school applications.

 

As you are talking about Notebook for only study purpose, you can go for any brand other than Samsung, you just need to check the RAM of that particular notebook is providing.

Solid state drives are smoking fast. Got a pc network at home i am switching everything over to SDD.


The Samsung arrived late today. Installed extra RAM, got it up and running Windows 7, removing bloatware.

Need to let it charge and get it how i want it. Then will clone OS to SSD and use HDD as a backup drive.

Never had one of these things before, so its seems fast and ok to me so far.

Up and running on the notebook. Have MS Security Essentials, and Malwarebytes installed.

Error message 0x800106ba for Windows Defender keeps popping up. Defender was already installed, but I suspect it was off because of Norton, which i uninstalled already. MS fix that i tried did not fix the issue.

Any ideas or help would be great.

Notebook is a Samsung 305e5a running Windows 7.

 

I can't help you, but this is one problem I've always had with Windows. You don't do anything unusual and there's always some Error message that pops up or when you go to close down Windows some "Close Program Now" type box pops up.

 

yes, i am going to figure out if Norton put something in the Registry. i noticed defender was "off" when i was poking around, before i changed anything. I detest Norton, so that was the first thing to go.

 

Uninstall all the crapware, then run a registry scanner.

Yes, they still work, in this day and age.

I use Glary reg fixer, and it works.

Beyond all that, every OEM still loads too much crap on their systems these days, even if they say they don't. A good fix to this is to grab the .iso for your type of Windows and load from fresh.

If you are loading W7 fresh onto an SSD, W7 will automatically choose the best settings for itself for operation on an SSD. Not so much when you clone a HDD install to an SSD. Cut out all the alignment jibberish and drop a fresh install of W7 onto the SSD. Takes...like...8 minutes these days.

Also, forget MSE/Defender. They don't find anything these days. Grab a 3-PC license for Kaspersky AV (skip thier Internet Suite), it's like $50 for 1 year, but at least it finds things that MSE doesn't.

Did all of this. Still there. Even uninstalled / reinstalled. Must be a Norton thing in the registry. oh well.

better off uninstalling & removing registry files that no longer link to that uninstalled junk.
That's why I keep a good image around, rather reload than hunt for a solution & deal with fragments that'll cause issues later

Just ordered a Samsung series 9 ,supposed to be here Friday. I haven't Bern this excited in a long time. Actually losing sleep over it.

 

I've had mine for maybe 6 weeks - you'll like. I introduce her as the MacBook Air for W7

 

Still hadn't had a bunch of time to mess with it, but so far so good. I'm not noticing a slow SSD like some are complaining about. Startup from sleep in probably 8 seconds or less. The track pad is tricky, but I think it's all about learning what parts of the pad to click on.

Also, as I'm going from a 6 year old Dell that took over an hour, may have even been closer to two, to transfer 20gigs of music. Had it all on the ssd in under 10 minutes.

I'm liking it though. First time using Windows 7 and so far so good.

 

I needed to open the manual to understand the trackpad a bit better - and the difference between 2 finger and 3 finger moves.

 

Are you thinking about upgrading your SSD to a 256gb?

I don't really need much room on mine (only have abot 70gigs on my current computer), but contemplating doing it to have some extra room.

 

Naw - I've still got 33GB free.

 

Track pad is a strange thing to get used to. My notebook was going nuts wanting to update everything, when i needed it to be doing schoolwork. Finally got it where its happy, and I turned all the update crap to "OFF". Stuck a wireless Trackman mouse in it, love those things.
