Now Honda is part of this Ferrari-McLaren mess.

FIA should launch their own investigation just like any other racing series with balls. Maybe Bernie doesn't want to put up his own money for an investigation and rather use the tax payers and their public (free) legal system.

 

It is only the FIA's matters and they should step up (I think they will). It wouldn't piss me off if there were cork bats in baseball. That is if everyone in baseball was allowed to use them. If someone is found to use the cork bats, do NOT take it up with the cops. Let the commissioner of the league handle it. Same can apply to steroids. It's about an even playing field and the way to enforce it. The latter is what I'm talking about.

I never said I want cheating in F1. I don't. Really. I just don't want this crap to be using up our law enforcement and legal resources. This can all be handled by the FOM/FIA alone. You know why? Because they do that in other series and penalize cheaters with fines and points deductions. It works.

My prediction? The two named engineers get fired, and nothing...absolutely nothing...else happens after a long piddling investigation.

 

This is not the typical case of employees changing teams and taking their knowledge with them which I think is more what Matchett was saying.

Sure, in theory the "non-disclosure" agreement means your brain should be zapped of all prior knowledge before you start with a new team but we know better.

This is, IMHO, a major case of industrial espionage against one of the most well known brands in the world. They have a duty to their shareholders to act.

Now, hopefully it will come out that Coughlan/Stepney (and it looks like others) were simply pi$$ed off employees that hatched a plan to take Mac and Ferrari data to the likeliest bidder and that no one benefitted from their theft and therefore no points need be deducted from anyone and normal programimng can resume...

I guess (!) their plan would have been to use the information they assembled only for themselves in their new team, not making public (to their colleagues) that they have Ferrari (and maybe McLaren) data, but rather presenting everything they could extract as their own ideas.

 

+1...from recent reports, this sounds like the likely scenario.

 

Lets get your thoughts on a similar scenario. Suppose it were the superbowl time in the USA . After the game it is discovered that the winning team,s coach had received the entire playbook of the losing team. Coach says he didn't use the info to directly combat the opposing teams offense or defense but he kept the playbook anyway.
How do you think that would go over and do you think that the company that had paid hundreds of millions to sponsor the events on TV and now had their name associated with this scandel should say, "Oh well, it's just a silly game".

 

You mean what happened with Nick Saban and the Fins last year agains the Pats? Saban knowing the play calling by Tom Brady? He bought a tape that had the plays with audio and the Patriots complained. It was handled internally and not in the circuit court or higher.

But, It's starting to look like "they" weren't gathering the data for use in the superbowl but rather for their own later use.

It seems to me that they had the playbooks from *both* teams, intended to keep 'em to themselves and make use of the info once they were in their new team. Still *way* wrong, which is why we've got to believe both have ruined their careers at the least and will serve time *if* found guilty.

Stealing is Ok if it is done in the name of sport? No.

Should the police be involved. It is up to the person or entity that had their property stolen. It is not the decision of an uninvolved third party to make.

We do not know what SF's plan is. They may be building a case to seek restituition from somebody. Perhaps Stepney, Perhaps Ron Dennis...who knows.

A more apt anology (than corking a bat) would be if the Indianpolis Colts playbook was stolen by a disgruntled Colts coach (Sh!tney) and sold it to an opposing team's (the Dolts) defensive coordinator (Condom) and the Colts lost every game they palyed with the Dolts from the date the playbook was stolen (without the Colts knowlege of course). I would assume that the team that stole the book (the Dolts) would have to forfeit every game they played against the Colts at minimum. They may well be barred from the playoffs too.

I would also assume that the defensive coordinator (Condom) of the Dolts as well as the party who stole the playbook from the opposing team (Sh!tney) could be prosecuted and perhaps even go to jail and make restitution.

Perhaps this has happened in the NFL and has been able to be settled out of court. The point is that it is up to the offended party to decide how to best protect their rights within the law.

If something pretty drastic is not done, the sport will be full of Sh!tneys and Condoms and the Dolts will win. (As you can see, I am not a Dolts fan and never will be).

To follow this analogy further, assume that the owner/coach of the Dolts (Yon Penis) is secrectly aware of the deal. He hasn't seen the Colt's playbook, but he knows his Defensive Coordinator (Condom) is using it to beat the Colts. What Happens to Mr. Penis? Does he get to keep his Dolts franchise?

If he gets away with it, it is a reminder that in today's world every Penis needs a Condom for protection.

I think you're missing the point. I'm saying for Ferrari and McLaren to take it up with the FIA/FOM before even thinking of taking this to court (somewhere) to ***** and moan over something that doesn't really matter to the real world to be quite honest. It's just like other sports where cheating goes on. It's enforced by the people that run the series. I don't even know which courts they would go to if Ferrari were to file a claim. Would it be in Italy? England because McLaren is based in Woking? Maybe somewhere else in the EU for an international court?
