http://gizmodo.com/358219/a-consumers-cheat-sheet-to-hd-dvds-death-and-blurays-victory/ "Unless you're morally opposed to gaming or having a gaming device in your living room, you should go with the PlayStation 3. It's software-upgradeable, plus it's relatively cheap even when compared to standalone Blu-ray players. You even get a gaming system thrown in." I am going to pick up a PS3.
Really? I haven't been following, I thought HD DVD would be the one to come out on top based on the better brand name? Go figure. At least I haven't bought any players or disks yet.
Yes HD-DVD is officially dead. DO NOT BUY IT even if you find a very good deal. Retail stores are just trying to empty their stock.
Somehow I just knew I was on the wrong bandwagon when I brought my HD-DVD player before xmas...... Fortunately other than the free DVDs in the package I only purchased 1 HD movie (Planet Earth) Oh well, I can use it as a cup-holder in the future.
Besides the technology, IMO, the name is really what killed it. "HD DVD? You mean I have to get another player to play a DVD with HD content"? It sounded like an evolution of the same technology instead of something new. "Blue Ray" comes off, marketing speak, as something new and different. Well, you can get movies dirt cheap now. Hopefully you didn't get a DIVX (Digital Video Express) player from Circuit City too.
That gives me a bit more of a comfort factor with the PS3 but most likely I won't take the plunge until later on this year.
i'm waiting probably until this coming holiday season to pick up either a ps3 or blu-ray player, partly for increased technology, but mainly for a dropping of price, hopefully.
They cost 399 - 499 depending on the storage capacity (but you can always put a USB drive off of it too). The current 399/40GB version will no longer play the PS2 games. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlayStation_3. Also, stand by... a 120GB is rumored to come out soon.
Depends on which ps3 you buy 40 doesn't 60 and 80 do. 40 costs 399. And if you can find any more 80 gb models then they will run about 499.
last i checked, 399 for the bottom rung model, but for the same price i can pick up a blu-ray only player right now, so why not get the gaming platform with it? i'm not big into gaming, i'm rocking the n64, but i figure if it'll cost me the same, may as well have that option should i choose to grab a few games every now and then.
Fortunately not. The Divx 'rent' business plan was pretty stupid. But I was on the betamax & memory stick wagon. Dang Sony always chooses the wrong technology.........oh wait, never mind. I saw how Blu-ray was getting the upper hand, but I thought HD would hang around for a few years. Oh well.
Cool thing is that PS3 will upgrade to Blue Ray version 2.0 when it comes out. It's software is upgradable. So yes, I would recommend buying PS3 if you want to pick up a blue ray player.
Akira, do you know how they upgrade it, I am looking to get a PS3 for the games, but maybe some blurays. It will be free from a website I know, so I am not complaining.
I bought my PS3 last year, mostly for the purpose of it's BluRay player, as I don't play vid games too much anymore. It works like a gem and I couldn't be happier. Even if the quality is slightly better with a stand alone BluRay player (which I don't even know is the case, I've heard conflicting stories about this), the convenience of having a PS3 be an all in one setup heavily outweighs all other factors/decisions for me. Highly recommend it.
Plug it into the internet, and the device will connect you to Sony's web service, from which upgrades can be obtained. Overnight, the PS3 went from being an albatross around Sony's neck to being the item to have.
Actually we did - Beta was largely Sony supported, and the better format, plus more expensive. It failed (largely because Sony initially didn't want other companies licensing the technology). VHS was cheaper, not as good of a picture, but was supported by far more manufacturers which drove prices down. It won (obviously). HD-DVD was cheaper, supported largely by Toshiba, and equal in terms of quality of sound/picture. Blu-Ray was supported by 95% of all consumer electronics manufacturers, and had more than 50% of studio support from day 1. And it was more expensive. It won.
My HD-DVD add-on for my 360 stays right HERE until Transformers comes out in Bluray!! Damn Toshiba, 200 $ out the window. But I hope I'll get some high def movie bargains when the big chains start dumping HD-DVD discs
Not gunna happen. The PS3 is a POS Blu-Ray player though. Now using the Denon DVD-2500BTCI and couldn't be happier. Although I love my HD-DVDs too..
