What will you do now? With the prospect of weeks and possibly months before any real civilization is back in New Orleans and neighboring areas the outlook (I'm thinking economically) looks grim, at least for a while before those federal $ come into play.

I know some people are just considering moving out, some have to rent houses/apartments in Baton Rouge or even as far as Birmingham until they're able to return home. I know of one person who has a trucking company and is depending on FEMA to come through and rent his trucks to maintain some sort of income while another who runs an A/C company said he will most likely not have any business for at least 2 months.

With so many homes, businesses and schools destroyed many people don't have anything to go back to, especially the impoverished who mostly rent and probably don't feel any obligation to clean and rebuild.

What is your outlook for the city and yourself?

I pray strongly for the courage and the bravery to continue pursuit of your personal dreams...........

As a lifelong resident of the Texas Gulf coast, these storms are the price to be paid, for the enjoyment of wonderful beauty of the coastal area.

Galveston Island was rebuilt, and raised after the Great Storm of 1900, and in 1961, Hurricane Carla put over 18" of water thru the recently completed home of my parents.....:(

It was over my head at the time! Giant dragline cranes walked thru the neighborhoods, carrying our wooden floors away, after they were chopped out. Impressive for a three year old.......I recieved a Tonka replica of one for Christmas that year!

More recently Storms Allison and Alecia caused severe damage to the Houston metropolitan area. You should see the rainwater pumps protecting the Texas City refinery areas.......huge!

It's a very personal decision to make. It is also a poignant reminder that you come into this world with nothing.........and you will not take a single material possesion with you, as you leave. Love your partner and your family, and concentrate on the things that are important.

As long as the sun rises, and as long as you can stand and draw a breath, you have what you need to continue your walk towards a brighter future.

Best wishes, thoughts and prayers, from your neighbor on Galveston Island.

Whilst most business's will be hit hard, the construction and oil industries will boom for quite a few years after this disaster......and that will in turn boost many of the service industries hit

I'm looking forward to going back to New Orleans in a couple of years to a brighter cleaner but still fun city

I imagine that 5-10 years down the road New Orleans will be a wonderful place to live that is better off than it was before this tradgedy. I will be moving back MUCH MUCH sooner, but it will take quite some time for the local economy to get back on its feet.

New Orleans, now more than ever, has gained the respect it deserves. Many parts of the country simply do not realize the importance of this great city, both economically and culturally.

I picture the rest of the nation truly giving itself to help New Orleans and surrounding areas come back stronger than ever.

Hopefully now we will get assistance fixing the many problems New Orleans has. Things like the deplorable public school system, rampant crime, and underfunded police units.

While nobody wanted this to happen, it IS and opportunity for the city to reinvent itself and celebrate its true glory that may have been smudged over the past couple of decades.

New Orleans is a celebration of life.

Think about it like this. New Orleanians are some of the most resilient people in this country. Honestly, if we can still believe the Saints after all of these years I know we can rebuild this city! ;)
