Well, before I just didn't like the car. That feeling is rapidly expanding. You're going to need a thicker skin if you venture onto the internet often. Image Unavailable, Please Login
As a fellow designer I would suggest growing a thicker skin. As im sure you know when chatting on the internet people lose their 'polite filters' and can be very direct and come across as more rude than they intended. Im pretty well known in my community and I get dragged across the coals on occassion as far as my designs. But you shouldnt take it personally nor should you ever ever ever snap at those who are criticizing you even if they are rude. I think your work is great. I prefer it much more than anything Ferrari is doing and I think its better than the P4/5. Thats not a slag on Jim or his car, I really like his car. But I like this better. Anyway...this is a fantastic forum but you do need a thick skin as its filled with highly successful , aggressive ,Type A people who are all 'Big Dogs' where they come from. I hope you continue to come around. I think your design sense would benefit this forum and I think this forum could benefit you.
Users probably would have been more circumspect about their comments if they knew you were on the board or would see this thread; but that was before you joined. I also recommend you stick around. I think you'll find that if you present your work, many people will in fact give you their honest opinions phrased more constructively, if you respond with a genuine interest in hearing it. In this case, what you got was a one time chance to hear genuine untempered opinions by enthusiasts and owners who are your target audience. If you actually read through it, you got both positive and negative comments. You might consider the real value of that rather than being offended by users who were not trying to be polite and hide their feelings, because of your presence, but focussed solely on their personal reaction to the design.
I like it. I see suggestions of many cars I like in it (i.e. all of the great cars mentioned in this thread, plus a few more), but no lines actually copied. Most of all, I think the proportions are right. This is a modern take of the classic mid-engined sports racer. P.S., I've never smoked before, and I think smoking is disgusting; but for some strange reason, when looking at that car, I feel compelled to buy a pack of Marlboros . . .
I don't like it. It looks like a genetic mix between a GT40, a Corvette and Salvadore Dali's version of a 308. They also took away the trademark rear round lighting. I would like to see something with functional and artistic body apertures like the F40 (the F50 is just too curvy and embellished). The P4/5 should remain Jim's pursuit of individuality (good work here). And don't put any ears on it either (599XX).
Why the name "angrysasha"? Is this a clue? Despite that, I have always heard that beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. I do not find the design of the car in the orignal post to be very beautiful. It does not look or feel like a Ferrari. I can not see anything in common with the P4, which by the way, the owner of the P4/5 has two of those. You obviously like this design. Wonderful for you. Does that make me be a motivation killer? How about just realizing if the majority of people have negative reactions it is just time for the designer to go back to the drawing board? If one is going to throw out designs, they need to accept that other people have their opinions. They are not just going to kiss one's ass because they don't happen to like a specific design as a Ferrari. It would be a great Lotus.
You are all quite right, a definite overreacting on my part. Each man is certainly entitled to their opinion, what got to me was just the confidense some put into statements which were not something they know for certain! Fair enough tho, don't like the car? How many of BMW buyers would have liked a screenshot of a bangle design 7? Yet history shows, they were proven wrong. I'd like to think my p4 has some potential, altho far from perfect it has a direction in it's form language that is more modern than what we see on the street today.
Sasha, your work is excellent! but it's definitely not an Enzo replacement. Please consider submitting this design to GM or Lotus and you will get better replies. The only Ferrari look to this design IMO is the headlights.
Sasha; I like it a LOT as a supercar design! I couldn't care less about whether people think of it as the next enzo or not. Please keep massaging your designs and posting them here, or perhaps in a some-day-to-be DESIGN FORUM on FChat. And as a designer for 30+ years, remember that you will ALWAYS get more negative responses than positive; the trick is to separate the intelligent responses from the tossers, and then think about whether they have some validity in the context of what you are trying to achieve. Back in post#1 I said> "This design by Sasha Selipanov hints at the breadth of potential for the Enzo replacement". It is not the finish line at all but merely shows how a design could evolve that is not shackled to the conservative ideas that Ferrari has asked designers to give them. Something that is extreme can always be refined. However a design has to start somewhere before it can evolve. I would bet the replacement exterior design for the Enzo is a competition between an inside group and at least two outside groups. I still have not seen any individual person take credit for the 458 design. Who did the redesign of the initial 458 version after LdM announced they should try a design without the exterior scoops the 430 had been saddled with? The 458 has generated both positive and negative comments. Whatever replaces the Enzo will not be met with universal acclaim either... CH
@Sasha - I have only seen this design and the GTO concept. I would like to add that you will need thicker skin here, but you will NOT find a better or more receptive audience for your designs. You do have to weed out the wheat from the chaff as far as who you should listen to for critique. There are a LOT of people you should largely ignore, but then there are a few who do have the ears of the folks at Pininfarina and Ferrari. Those are going to be the ones you should look out for - many of them do not post but WILL see your work. This board has virtually all of the big people at both of those firms. I would STRONGLY encourage you to continue here as I think you have tremendous potential to be one of the "big dogs" on the board. Best wishes, PDG
funny.... as a designer, i do not have too much exposure outside my professional world... presentations to design management, sometimes to the bosses of companies but never to direct customers. we do lots of debating, arguing and discussing amongst my peers in the industry but rarely show our work directly to a member of the general public. i have only had a couple of times in my (to date) short career when my work was being shown outside the walls of design departments and specialized websites/magazines.... once my car (it was being prepared for a production run) was shown at a clinic in california to prospective buyers. I was present at the event but was not allowed to either defend or even discuss my design with the visitors.... MAN, i suffered .... The clinic went well overall, got good results; but some people had such a crazy take on the whole thing, i could feel my brain cells dying as i was listening to their arguments and their likes and dislikes... I am very comfortable arguing and discussing with my peers, but talking to people outside of the industry is new for me... something i should get used to and indeed like some of you said, grow thicker skin. Thanks everyone for your honest feedback! I will take it for what it is.
