I bought a cheap laptop with an i3-3110M that is supposed to have a 2 core CPU. Windows 8 reported it as such. Since windows 8 is a mess I loaded up Ubuntu Linux which of course is amazingly better. However Linux reports the CPU as having 4 cores. Is there a way to determine if this is an error in reporting or if marked off cores have been activated, I know this is possible on some CPUs but not sure about this one.

i have in I-7 3770 its a quad core...but it hyperthreads.. so will show 8 cores..(when you check)
not sure on your cpu but food for thought

I don't think they'd give an extra "core" unless is an in between chip design or some funny production issue ... the hyperthreading suggested is the likely cause, and that is a software thread and obviously would be slower than a real 4-core which will show up if u start cranking some heavy numerical stuff.

i3's are dual core with hyperthreading, so 2 physical cores with 2 virtual cores. i5's are 4 physical cores and i7's are 4 physical cores with 4 virtual cores.

Windows should show the same 4 cores for an i3 as linux as the cores are determined on the chip and not on an operating system level - ie an i3 and i5 will both look like a quad core to the OS even though they operate differently internally.

Check a BIOS for hyperthreading option or maybe update the BIOS on motherboard. One of the OS's reads CPU ID and disregards call to query actual threads...
