Only one of my number plate lights at the rear has been working for the last few weeks so I decided to have a look today. Got a replacement bulb and unscrewed the housing for it and suddenly the other working light turned off as well. Both bulbs seem to be working fine and changing them doesn't help. The inside of the housings are very rusty but it doesn't seem to be the cause of the issue.

Anyone know of any common faults or anything else I could check?

Has anyone else had any problems like this before?

    Thanks all

If you have a volt meter, check for electric power at both housings. That rust may be preventing a proper ground to complete the circuit. You could try a piece of wire to force a good ground to the frame. If that works, then the housing(s) may need replacing.

    Good Luck!!!!!

OMG, I am very sorry then. Haha, it pays to check around. I remember seeing these when I was looking for something and thought I was doing the OP a favor. Good looking out. I will delete if I can.

I agree with Mr Bock. Check for voltage on the bulb socket.

First, check to ensure there is no rust or corrosion on the bulb socket. If there is - clean it with scotch brite or sand paper, then clean it with contact cleaner or alcohol.

Then check for voltage and there should be 12 Volts.

If you can wait, I will be writing a DIY write up soon on how to convert license plate regular bulbs to LED bulbs soon. Just waiting for the dealer to get done replacing the defective fuel pump, then I will start my LED mods.

Thanks guys. Will do. I've managed to locate the wire in the engine bay that powers both the lights so will check that with a volt meter too although it does seem hard to get to as its tucked behind the engine lid closing mechanism.

Was tempted to do the LED things but the lights on the number plate are quite good dull if you ever do any high speed driving at night! Was also tempted to upgrade all the lights to led but to go the route without adding resistors to all the indicator lights, it can be relatively expenses. In the end I went for the chrome incandesant lights that flash orange which look great especially in the front lights but I think I will go led in the front side lights as voicy has done as they do look very orange next to the xenons. Look forward to the guide anyhow.

+1 for keeping the plate lights as dull as possible to avoid plate cameras and such

Hey guys, managed to have a little play around today with a multimeter. Voltage on the lights is 0.05v Definitely some current coming through but far short of the 12v i should be getting.

Followed the wire back through to the engine bay and to the cable connection behind the locking mechanism for the engine hood. Tested there and again 0.05v!

Anyone know what to check next? Is it in series with another set of lights or any other electrical circuit? Maybe a coincidence but I also took the car for a drive the other night and noticed the heater controls were not backlit as I think they usually are. The "stop" button amd the air recirculation button are lit as they should be though.

I've also replaced some of rear lights over the last few months which could be the cause but it was working correctly after then until both the number plate bulbs blew.

Thanks for any help all :)

I find it odd the two license plate lights are fed by different circuits. They should be wired parallel together.

I suggest you check the wiring diagram and see the power comes from the same wire feed.

If I am not so busy with work I will check for you but I am currently swamped...

Thanks for the reply Dan. Yes both number plate lights are on the same circuit and are both showing 0.5v. I don't know if they are linked to any other lighting circuit as despite a long google search and using the the user manual, I've found nothing.

Really have no idea what would be causing this.

Lets try and reverse the process. What mods have you done to the car lately?

Have you checked your fuses? You may have blown the fuse.

Is your car coupe or Spider?

Thanks Dan, sometimes its back to the basics and pow it smacks you in the face! It was just the fuse! Ruled it out as there was some current coming thru to the lights and I stupidly assumed a blown fuse would result in nothing coming through at all. I'm about to go and drown myself in a sink just for spending so much time over something so simple. Thanks so much tho.
