Folks, any of you work at BMW dealers in the tri-state, or otherwise have helpful connections for an FChatter considering picking up a new daily driver?

PM or post... Thanks in advance.

hi, we buy our cars from Aimon Altaai @ Park Ave BMW in NJ. You will not walk out of the place feeling like you've been ripped off. He's a fellow car enthusiast. If you do end up contacting him, tell him Sharif w/ the m3 and 750, or Faisal with the m5 sent you. He'll take care of you :)

Talk to Emil first. I know he has a good friend at a BMW dealership. I have a connection in NJ if that falls through also.

    Sharif, thanks.

Maybe not. What is the tax on auto purchases there? This is a bit of an open question for me. I'm wondering whether there is any advantage to buying it in a surrounding state, keeping in mind I'm living in NJ right now and may end up living in Texas soon... If anyone wants to weigh in on this, the advice/thoughts would be welcome.

Emil was kind enough to provide me with his contact, but I'll take yours too, if you don't mind...

I believe you pay the tax of the area you live in. But I could be wrong. What car are you looking for?

That is correct, tax is paid in the state you register your car in!

J, let me know what you are looking for or need, i know a few people at several BMW dealers!

Yes and no. If you buy a car out of state and pay the tax there, when you bring it in to NY for example, if you can show proof of tax being paid elsewhere, you don't pay the tax in NY (that is of course separate from a registration fee, which you still have to pay when and if you re-register the car in NY). I am in the middle of a job transition. I just moved out of Manhattan into NJ temporarily. It's not easy to get around where I am, and renting a car at $500 a week seems silly. So, thought I might go ahead and buy one and just drive it to whatever job I'm likely to go to... (or trailer it down there along with the Ferrari, which I'd rather not use as a DD.)

So, it could make sense for me to get the car in a state other than NY or NJ if, when all's said and done, the deal I can negotiate plus the taxes and registration fees confer some advantage... Still trying to figure this out.

Thanks Martin. Not really sure. It's either the new 335i Turbo, or a Certified Pre-Owned 330xi. Definitely need a serious warranty on the car, and I'm looking for a 4 door (need something fun and practical), so no M3s for me. Five series is too big and too expensive, and while the Audis are beautiful, I've got my heart set on a beemer...

    Thoughts...?

Well as i told you the 335 coupe that i drove was awesome, im sure for a sport sedan the 335 sedan is just as good! Question, have you thought about the new Infiniti G35? Amazing car for the price and damm bulletproof! I have a hook up Comp. Infiniti as well.

Did you drive any of these cars? I think that should be your first step ;)

Since you're looking for 4 doors I'm going to have to recommend a certified pre-owned E39 (previous body style) M5. I think that's one of the best cars ever made. Looks good, carrys 4-5 people and can hang with the F360 without a problem. It should be around 45k for an excellent example, less than that new 335i :)

Thanks for the recommendation. Know anyone with such an example that I can drive?

I drove the 335i. It's really a sweet ride. Haven't driven the Infinity, but my girlfriend had a brand new one as a loaner for a week while her Infinity was getting repaired and she was frankly underwhelmed. Still, I plan to try one. Who should I see at which Infinity dealer?

Agreed, the E39 M5 and the E36 M3 are the two of the best BMWs ever made.
