So I finally got it done and purchased an apartment in NYC and am scheduled to close on Oct 1st. So now comes the fun part of decorating the place. Have been casually doing some research in magazines, online, and walking around different boutiques in the city.

Wanted some advice or tips from you guys, see what you think. 23 yr old, single guy, would prefer the (i know it's cliche) but "modern/urban" look to my apartment. Any great boutiques or designers you have worked with? My mother had her own interior design business for 20+ and will be a great resource but she is....difficult....to work with (aren't most mothers!!!) so I want to do as much or all of this on my own. My focus/determination is there, the only real obstacle is my time.

Thanks in advance guys, I'm excited and a bit scared for this

Congrats on your new apt. Good luck on the furnishing. My best suggestion would be to just grab a whole ton of magazines and copy from there. That is what I do. LOL!

Modern/Urban -- my kind of style. Check out:

    -- MDC on 81st & Broadway ('high design' on a semi-budget)
    -- Lee's Studio on 57th & Broadway'ish (tons of modern lighting/couches)
-- Bo Concept - several locations ('modern' IKEA, a bit more expensive)
-- Ligne Roset - several locations (ultra high end, priced accordingly)

yeah... that would be absurd...besides everyone knows that if you drive around the hamptons on the day after labor day you find all kinds of goodies thrown in front of houses recently evacuated by summer tenants, which are there for the taking. I've seen furniture, clothes, excersise equip, even food.... but that you have to be quick to get before the racoons go through it. Although they haven't found any rabbid racoons in suffolk this year, only nassau, so the food would probably still be OK, especially if it was kept in the freezer right before it was placed by the curb.

Not that it's equivalent in price to IKEA or stores of that ilk, that sell updated interpretations of Scandanavian modern, but alot of the mid-century modern stuff that's copied, e.g., in catalogs like Design within Reach and at stores like Palazetti (are they still even in business?) is not much more than the real thing. For example, the standard discount on Herman Miller and Knoll- two of the best known companies for some of the most famous high-end designer furniture- is at least 40% off retail. That means that you can buy a real Charles Eames lounge chair and ottoman for little more than a knock-off, and some of the knock-off's are pretty shoddy. This approach is based on an assumption that you want to buy a small number of high quality pieces, ones you can keep forever. Much of the classic furniture from the 20th century has been revived and is still being manufactured by authorized licensees. If you are patient, you can also assemble a nice combination of interesting antique furniture at fairly reasonable prices- tip, don't shop in the city, come up to the country, where the decorators buy the stuff on the cheap.
Good rugs you will pay a price for, but look at estate sales- yard sales in the better neighborhoods in Westchester, etc. Beds- Charles Rogers in the city sells very high quality wrought iron beds that are also classics and are not over the top in price. Bedding- call the 4 SEaoSons hotel. They can supply a fairly reasonably priced mattress/box spring/pillows that will blow you away.
All of this takes more time than simply going to a retail store and ordering a bunch of 'stuff' but the difference is well worth it. I have furniture that i have bought in Europe and had shipped back to the States, things i acquired when i was still a teenager and had an interest in design and objects, and none of it is easily replicated by what you can walk into a store and buy today. If you can live with a few good pieces- keep it spartan to start- you can gradually acquire things that you can keep a lifetime, and will remain classic, no matter what current fashion dictates. Your eye and sophistication also develops as you see and learn to appreciate more things of this nature. Take a few minutes, if you are near a Barnes & NOble, and go into the architecture design section and look at some of the home interiors shown. I'll bet the stuff that is most appealing is a combination of old and modern, done in a low-key, uncluttered style, without looking 'decorated.' There is truly an art to developing any eye for this stuff- and you can often find it on the cheap if you are patient and are willing to buy the instant you see something that clicks.

Kitchen is almost complete- then the house can be put back into shape. I'd be glad to host a get together here. It's quite beautiful. Only downside is a fairly steep driveway, unlike my prior house, which had oodles of parking space on level turf.
