Are there any places that have blown you away recently in the city? I'm looking for any suggestions aside from Italian, French, or a steak house. Thanks.

Are you looking for fine dining places, or just good food in general?

Milos Estiatorio, located on 125 West 55th Street. The best seafood restaurant I have ever experienced, their selection is mindblowing.

Italian, but not your typical italian is Barbuto on Washington Street in the meat packing district. It's in an old garage, I reccomend going when the weather gets warmer and you can sit outside.
The owner, Jonathan Waxman, taught Bobby Flay how to cook. The menu changes daily. Jon goes to the farmers market at Union Square every morning, buys what looks good and cooks it. They cook most entrees on a 200 year old european wood burning oven. The chicken cooked on that thing is the best you'll taste. Hogs and Heifers is just up the street, you'll see plenty of bikes, bikers and biker chicks ride by during dinner.

A second for Barbuto; it's a real neighborhood place with great food.

I'm in town a lot and I always stay in the area as it's close to the office.

Per Se of course for fine dining is the best and not to be missed.

Capital Grill opened up downtown recently which has been awesome the few times i've gone. There is also innateso downtown by the battery park ritz which is a nice new italian place.

Are we talking a small mortgage payment for two or a couple hundred bucks?

Depends how much you like wine :)

Its normally ~$311 per person including service and tax with no alcohol. If you go for lunch on a weekend there is an optional smaller 5 course menu for $175 per person. Either way I'd def make a point to go there at least once it really is an amazing experience.

Went to a former Mario Batali place called "Po" in the West Village about a year ago. Maybe 15 tables and great food. As reasonable as you want it to be - 25-30/pasta dish.

With a meal like that you need at least two bottles of the vino per couple. I imagine the average price of a bottle is probably $500 but if you sneak in two "cheaper" ones you may make it out for a thousand bucks?

Anyone been to Bar Americain the Bobby Flay place? I will be spending a couple nights in the city fairly soon and look forward to treating my palate :)

I didn't see the wine vs. food breakdown, but my father-in-law dropped $4,600 for himself and his lady friend. Utterly ridiculous if you ask me.

Not at all actually. The average price per bottle is nowhere near that. You can get a really amazing bottle for ~125+ range or just do the wine pairing. In fact my fav wine from there is Modicum which Thomas Keller (Per Se chef/owner) produces in Napa and its only about 175-200 per bottle. Plus I'm not sure if its just me but I don't tend to drink as much at Per Se. The focus is really on the food and its complexity.

I tried to go to bar americain yesterday but arrived 5 min before they were closing :( If you go be sure to let us know how it is I'd be interested.

I've been wanting to check out Bobby Flay's places as well, what did you dislike about Bar Americain wingfeather?

If you like sea food I'd highly recommend checking out Del Posto. Expect to spend a hefty amount as without alcohol my brother, father and I spent approximately $700 there - highly worth it though.
