At the end and beginning of every month I always run into the a couple of nice revenue generation roadblocks. Anyway, I thought I'd pass them on:

1 - 96th Street Entrance Ramp to the West Side highway -- Getting onto the WSH there will be an NYPD roadblock where officers are checking cars for expired inspection, no front plate, or any other slight infraction they can come accross. This roadblock sets up at aroun 10AM till the early afternoon and is usually gone by rush hour. If you have no front plate or no tint, do not get on or OFF the WSH at 96th St during this time period.

2- Dyckman Street Exit Ramp -- As you are heading north on the WSH right after the last exit before the tolls, the PA cops will be parked on the entrance ramp shooting laser from marked cars. This trap comes right after a blind turn, leaving you no chance to slow down till after they've hit you.
3- About 100' before the tolls on the WSH/HH P'kway -- Right after you've cleared the above speedtrap, you might think it's safe to accelerate back up to the 40mph posted speed limit: WRONG! About 100' right before the toll, the speed limit goes from 40mph to 10mph!!! I see both NYPD Highway and PA cruisers pacing people and nailing them in that area! That's **30** mph OVER the speed limit! An absolute ridiculous infraction, but an infraction nonetheless. I see this speed trap during weekdays in the AM, and only notice it heading north.

4- WSH right after the GWB split -- Heading South right after the split to the GWB there is a nice flat stretch for 200' or so that has a nice right hand turn with a major blind spot. Right after the turn Highway NYPD cruisers set up shooting laser. Be careful going around the turn as you will have no time to slow down once you've come around.

I've noticed over the last few months that the NYPD is very aggressive in going after minor traffic stuff at the beginning and end of the month. I've even seen cops on foot issue tickets to motorists.

    hth,

Oh yah, here's a priceless little tidbit:

Down by Canal on the WSH I've seen cops on those little "pig in a can" things shooting LASER?! WTF?! Also the cops on Canal by the entrance to the tunnel WILL ticket you for talking a cell phone (unless it's hands-free).

I can't say I mind all these things, but I did finally put a front plate on my car.

This is a big one for me... Front plate NEVER, EVER, EVER going on. I almost would rather not drive than put one on. First, my car runs hot enough without any airflow obstruction (I know, can mount off to the side) and second, it's FUGLY!!! (even more so mounted off to the side). By the way, no disrespect for those of you with a plate mounted. This is just my purely subjective opinion...

    Nabbs, excellent idea.

Queensboro Bridge (Queens bound) 2nd Ave and 58th street. Often check for expired reg.

CPW from W65th-W86th, Cruiser parked on sidewalk on the Park side with laser/radar.

FDR (south bound) last exit near Broad Street - Cruiser often hides behind the entrance to FDR from Brooklyn Bridge...got nailed 6 month ago...thank god for my Shield...no tickets.

    One more:

By the Fairway getting onto the WSH heading North on 125th ST -- When you make a left from 12th Ave to 125th St you will see NYPD with parked cruisers on foot. They flag over people who make the turn from the right lane. If you are NOT in the left lane DO NOT make the turn, nasty little ticket.

Btw, anybody see NYPD undercovers in NYC Taxi Livery yet? That's always a fun one!

Yes, the give away is that the it's usually with #Y## (not all the time) but most of the NYC Taxi/NYPD has "Y" as the second digit.

FWIW, living very close to a precinct, I've made the following observation: undercover taxis still have the old T prefix license plates from the TLC. All legit taxis now have a license the same as the medallion.

That's not true. The #Y## has the matching medallion and plate.

Just saw my first one of these today. Didn't catch the medalion, but I must say it's a little creepy to see a yellow cab pulling a car over. Now I'll be looking over my shoulder even more than usual when in the F car...

you are right on # 3 above on the HH always there and always out a little past 9am catching peopel speeding late for work ( real nice huh!)

I hate my qv with the front plate but the cops will make you pay big time if you try and go throught the tunnels w/o one...they live for this kinda infraction. As for cooling the 308, I was always thinking tomount it but tod rill holes in the plate for airflow but I am certain there is a law against that too.

Also, NO right turn from 42nd onto fifth in front of the library.
Alos watch out there are time you can't make a RIGHT trun from Fouth Ave. on to 14th. they set-up a trap there too.

Can no longer get parking cards at visitor's bureau on 7th ave / 54th any longer..only place now is on-line or city-hall.

Just saw a nice new gold/copper Maserati pulled over on the HH at speedtrap #4 this AM as I was driving north. Hope it wasn't anyone here.

    You're both right. :)

It's actually 6Y##, not just any prefix with Y in it, and those have matching 6Y## plates. But as Buzz pointed out, since so many people caught on to the 6Y thing, many current ones have totally random medallion lights but the TLC "T276519000" (etc.) plates down below...

I don't quite understand why there always has to be a 'tell' -- maybe so other cops don't get confused?
