NEW YORK (AP) -- The New York Police Department is adding the muscle of the old "General Lee" to its fleet of cars. The department has announced plans to buy a string of 2006 Dodge Chargers to track down speeders. The 1969 version of the Charger "starred" in "The Dukes of Hazzard" television show and last year's movie version. There will be a V-six version of the muscle car patrolling the streets of New York's five boroughs, and a V-eight version on the highways. Why go with such a powerful car? Leonard Lesko, who oversees the NYPD's fleet of cars, says speed matters when it comes to trying to keep up with all those flashy foreign cars on the road. (Copyright 2006 by The Associated Press. Old news and opportunistic on the part of the media. The NYPD has had 2 of these cars in their motor pool since April of last year for testing. Immediately following the NY Auto Show where the Hemi-Powered police car was introduced, Dodge handed the keys to the NYPD. These cars with light bars still cap at 148, 3mph faster than the current Police Interceptors with light bars. Removing the light bar adds about 7 and 5 mph, respectively... I'm glad that the delivery took place, finally, and it;ll be interesting to see how the patrol officers feel about them in heavy use.
I imagine in the hands of the right NYPD Highway Patrolman, a Charger is gonna be one baaaaaaad motha on the road.
There is nothing to worry about Dwight, we always drive the speed limit don't we? LoL! Dwight, I hope all is good down in NC. I will be in touch. I hope your cell # is the same.
