Valve seats. They freeze them to make them shrink, then place them in the cylinder heads. When they expand back to normal size, they get firmly seated in the heads. The robots you see doing the operation in the video are known as "Romeo & Juliet".

LOL! This is the best the NYT can send for a factory visit? I think the only thing he knows about Ferrari's is that they use gasoline -- and even that may be a guess for him. The guy can't even figure out the difference between a California and 458. LAME!

    "So what is this...
    (the penny drops)
... a Four Fifty Eight Italia."

"Are you, ah, are you a... a... a driver?"
    "Yeah."
"What do you, eh, what do you drive, then?"
"All the cars. All the Ferrari cars."

    This guy might be Amish.

That's unbelievable. I could see maybe Blind Women's Monthly doing a report like that, but NYT?! Come on! What a tool.

Kind of neat that he filmed the ride in from the airport and some of the neighborhood around the factory instead of the usual PR gloss you get with reports on a visit to Ferrari. Unlike the tourists; he got to film the eight cylinder car assembly process. When it comes to journalists Ferrari really rolls out the 'red carpet' it would seem! His 458 test drive showed the carbon dash option is already on some cars.
The Ferrari street & race cars look rather vulnerable displayed in the museum with no barriers...

He seemed to be more interested in vineyards than going to the Ferrari factory.
Maybe that's why he took the gig,to then go around the vineyards. The test
driver was looking at him like he was from another planet, he just should've
said he was a taxi driver for the factory.

The was some of the worst driving I've seen, I could have done a much better job than this guy. Plus I would have actually enjoyed it instead of wanting to go look at grapes.

If this reporter ever gets a clue and then watches this video he will surely cringe and roll into a fetal ball of self disgust.
He should do the honorable thing and have himself committed to an institution for the terminally dim-witted. I hope he never considers procreation. :)

Hey you got your wish! They are officially building a 458 Scuderia. Still have your list of favourite build priorities for what a new Scuderia should be developed like? Get the weight reduced has to be number ONE on the list but a new generation of tire development should hold some promise to.

No I'm the f***ing toothfairy. What an absolute waste. Guy might has well have toured the bratwust sausage factory in Germany as much emotion that he showed. I'd give my left nut to have been able to do what he did and I'd have written a whole hell of alot better review. Why the hell did the New York Times waste the opportunity of a lifetime on this idiot.....

Imagine if they sent him to Amsterdam's red light district.

"So, what do you do here exactly?"

"Hmmm.. that's interesting. You let men do what again? Can you explain?"

"And now, you're about to see me mount my first women....Here we go. Let me try a little faster...Yes, that seems better."

"It was a wonderful day here in Amsterdam. What a terrific way to end our visit as we view the windmills."

    That dude PISSES me off!

He's a freakin' reporter....? A PAID reporter??? WhereTF does he do his GD fact-checking at???!!!!?!?!?! "Two 458 Italias...one white...one yellow."

I have ZERO journalism skills and I could have done an exponentially better job than this dork in my reporting, driving (ok, I do own a 355 ;)), and using the GD camcorder.

What a waste....a shame...and a huge dent in the NYT credibility.

    I hate that loser!!!!!

    ARGH!!!!!

After spending a day at the Ferrari factory...and driving a 458 Italia...he still thinks a white California at the end is a 458 Italia. Dumbass!!!

********. I'll do a report at the Ferrari Factory for free..! He got paid for that? I can do a better job and I'm not even a reporter. But a lot of us here are just upset with this guy. Hey at least he was there, got to see what's inside the factory, got to ride in a 458 Italia, and got to drive it. I'm jealous!
