I know a few people on here are Cisco CCNA's / IP's etc..

Wonder if you could let me know roughly what the daily consultancy rate is for general network consultancy? And also if you know of any firms down in Kent way that offer consultants?

    Thanks

    Duncan

Put it this way, SteveP is a CCIE. He has a 360. And a Impreza. Plus a UniCycle. Suffice to say the daily rate is **not** cheap.

Depends on the level of qualifications/experience your looking for and the difficulty of the task.

For basic stuff, you could find a semi-experienced engineer for IT rates ~£30 - ~£40. But thats install and basic setup (interfaces, locking down services etc). Stuff any IT guy with a manual could do.

If you want a CCIE or experienced consultant your looking at ~£80+/hour charged by the day (8 hours).

And as the task gets more specialised/complex (basically less people are able to do it) the price rises. For cross product, cross technology, turnkey solutions. Or protocol/interworking analysis, standards compliancy issues (2 vendors boxes dont interwork and you have to isolate which is out of spec) £200/£300+ an hour can be more the ball park.

Assuming you don't have a business relationship with any engineers (since your asking the questions) your not going to get much movement on terms/rates.

If this is going to be a long term requirement I suggest you find an consultant/engineer your comfortable with and stick with him/her. For example with my major clients I will allow them to fill the remaining time in the 8 hour day with other stuff. Other clients however, have to book another day.

Blimey, that seems a very high rate - lucky them :) The average person I know here in Canary Wharf work for 300-400 per day in networks for the banks . Some exceptional people on 500+. But these guys are independent contractors, Im not sure if you are quoting consultancy rates with 800?

Either way, on www.jobserve.co.uk , the average is about 350 cross industry/region.

CISCO does command a premium over those rates.

A rough idea of how much it would cost for a CCIE (top of the tree type person)

Daily (less than 5 days concurent work) between £750 and £800 a day
Contract (min 3 months) between £55 and £150 per hour.

The Daily rates are for a small consulting firm, you'll be looking at slightly higher from one of the big IT firms (EDS, HP, BT global etc)

the demand for contract staff is on the up so rates and supply are begining to be affected (I take between 10 and 20 calls a week from headhunters)

I'm not in Kent but PM me with what you want as a lot of this stuff can be done remotely. we have a couple of Cisco CCIE's (inc me) and a few very good firewall guys. and we do give an Fchat discount!

Ade - get a raise mate!

I started in CW as a contractor in '97 and by the time i went permy in '99 i was on £580 per day as a lowly surf...........

I have a friend working for UBS at the moment on £1150 per day - and yes he reminds me all the time :)

My Mrs is a contract IT project manager and the rates they can command make your eyes water. Just ask Murph7355, he can buy a vintage ferrari every month out oh his loose change :D

Hey, im a university student with CCNA, im studying Management, information Technology and Language at Uni, and got my CCNA in my spare time.

My dream is to own a 360, (or 430 now!) so decided to go down the cisco route because I found it to be well paid.

Im looking for a years placement with a company for next year, where is best to look for a job for a year, all the ones ive found all require experince.

And how much roughly could I earn in Yorkshire for a year if I find a job where my CCNA is useful!?

    Thanks, Dan

CCIE's in the US get, at minimum, $1000 per day. I could see a CCNA or CCNP going for $160 an hour but not a CCIE. There are only a few hundered in the world and they command blank checks.

how boring is Cisco stuff tho'.

I'd say you'd have the pick of many cisco certified engineers at 500 p/day.

    Depends on what you need.

Point to point routing? IDSN RAS? a ccna could do that.

VLANS, firewalls are better left to CCNP.

Global Company's that require BGP with 802.11X wireless with Radius etc, etc are better left to CCIE's. CCIE's are the top of the top.

Test for a CCIE is 10K and is not refundable if you fail. You can take the test in San Francisco or Syndney.

Day one. Written test. If you pass, (94% don't) you are invited back for day 2
Day two. You are handed a configuration. You must complete it with an alloted time without using notes or help commands. All the while with two people taking notes over your shoulder. If you pass (90% of the remaining 10% don't) you are invited back for day 3
Day Three: Overnight they have destroyed your config and you have to put it back together. Events range from cut wires to bent pins to missing flash cards to flapping Frams to a cat5 connector left out.

If you pass you are a CCIE.

The Belgium site is new to me. I thought it was in SF and Syndey only still.

    I stand (sit actually) corrected.
