My 2000 F-150 needs some minor transmission work now that my kid is driving it full time. I'm not interested in taking it to a dealership and playing their overpriced games on a 10 year old truck. Does anybody have a mechanic in the North Dallas/Richardson/Plano area that they trust?

    Oh that F150.
I was thinking how to ship an F1 car back to the factory.
Hate to say it but most Tranny shops are somewhat unscrupulous.
It might be cheaper to get a rebuilt and DIY.

What kind of transmission work - do you think you need a transmission shop rather than a general mechanic?

Edit to say what LightGuy said - I have not found a transmission shop yet here in Dallas that I would go back to.

It would be worth it, if you had the time...to send the transmission to Mike Kurtz at Century Transmission just outside of Houston. He is a great guy and knows his stuff. Trustworthy as the day is long.

It's not a big deal, just is hard to get into first gear on occassion, when stopped. Doesn't happen all the time, but happens enough that it probably needs looked into.

No reason to drop the tranny and ship it Houston! :)

And I wish it was an F1 car!

Jim, I own a landscape company, I have over 6 trucks, that being said I am always repairing stuff on them. I have both Ford, Chevy and Isuzu NPR trucks (pickups and box vans). I have been using Teds Automotive on Church Rd in Dallas. He is located on the corner of Church Rd & Plano Rd right at the I-635 plano rd exit.
I have used Ted for over 15 years, I have used a few other mechanics on occaision and always kick myself and go back to Ted. He is an independant shop, family owned, honest as the day is long, very reasonable prices, and fairly quick turnaround.

I know exactly where that is, I used to date a girl that lived just a few blocks from there.

    Thanks!

Layth Fadhil in Garland is really great at rebuilding transmissions. www.goodwrenchautomotive.com he specializes in GM cars, but works on others as well.

He rebuilt the automatic transmission in our Z28 in 2003 and it's been perfect ever since.

    Jim,

I have a call into a guy that might be able to help you. He is a guy that works out of his garage very inexpensively and does VERY good work.

Will call you as soon as I hear back from him.
