Bob, this is just a thought and maybe one you have already tried. What about contacting the previous owner and asking him how he managed to get it inspected?

Thanks Eric. I contacted the guy that did the major for him and he wasn't aware of any problem, of course. He lives in KY. I still need to try one more reader to prove that there is for sure a problem as well.

Had a third higher quality obd reader hooked up and nothing so we can safely say it isn't a reader compatibility issue

I got a tone generator and if I can make any sense of the limited wiring routing that I know , I'm going to try and figure this out before I punt

Dr. Take a look at the parts manual on the ricambi site. They will have the wire harness's listed. Use that as a guideline and simply follow the wire colors to each connection point.

I remember someone posting a breakout box with the terminal ID's for the ECU to help you nail it down, cant remember who but were looking for it.

9 of 10 times its a bad connection when no reading

Good luck again and don't overthink this ;)

Tim. I tell you what. I have looked at the schematics on ricambi and at ferraridatabase. The schematic for the obd connector doesn't exist on there for a 97

I tell you what. Someone find me the wiring diagram and pin outs for a 97 5.2 motronics obd II connector and ill PayPal you $50

First one to post it on here will get paid.

If you think we are on here to help you for $50, then you are insulting us. The one who would absolutely have it is Dave Helms and you spoke to him. Otherwise the ECU OBD2 connections were already found by that old post you dug up.

The OBD2 connector is a mandated standard and it is defined as ...

    I don't know Bob personally......but, I agree.

Mitchell --- I think you have misunderstood his rationale and motivations.

No offense meant to anyone on here at all. I've spent hour pouring over every online document I could find and phone calls to algar , FIFA , Focj, Dave helms and jack at njb and no answers at this point.

I very much appreciate all the help from everyone on here . My apologies if I came across otherwise

If I could see a wiring schematic for my car I think I could make some sense of what the problem is. The schematics on ferrardatabase and ricambi are for 94 and they do not reference the obd connector that I can see.

ISO 9141-2. This protocol has an asynchronous serial data rate of 10.4 kBaud. It is somewhat similar to RS-232; however, the signal levels are different, and communications happens on a single, bidirectional line without additional handshake signals. ISO 9141-2 is primarily used in Chrysler, European, and Asian vehicles.

    pin 7: K-line
    pin 15: L-line (optional)
    UART signaling
K-line idles high, with a 510 ohm resistor to Vbatt
The active/dominant state is driven low with an open-collector driver.
Message length is restricted to 12 bytes, including CRC

In looking at our OBDII plug, pins 7,15 and 13 are the suspect ones for my issue as 4/5 ground and 16 12V have been checked and are OK

It appears the 7/15 are the data signal lines and 13 is manufacturers discretion. I am going to try using the tone generator to identify 7/15 at the ECU plug. I have no clue what 13 does but it appears by the above to be irrelevant for standard OBD operating protocols and diagnostics.

I am more than happy to report that I fixed my OBDII !!

Using the tone generator I traced pin7 to the ecu large connector and verified it was intact at pin 88. Using the tome generator on pin 13, I traced it to the smaller white connector in the passenger side ECU compartment as well. On unplugging it, this is what I found:

The lower left male contact was bent over and the plug was not seating all the way. The person who did the major did not reconnect the plug correctly.

Thank you to everyone for the help andpatience. Hopefully this thread will help someone else in the future

The wonders of the internet Barry

was wondering if anyone could translate

Aut Viam Inveniam Aut Faciam for me, i was told it means "i'll either find a way or make one" but i dont really trust the internet
It means exactly that, it's a quote from Hannibal, when his generals told him it was impossible to cross the alps by elephant, this was his response.

No really it was my latin from altar boy days :)

Thank you guys. I appreciate the support from both of you

Thanks go to my Dad, rest his soul, for building train layouts extraordinaire when I was a kid. I connected more switches, transformers , isolated sidings , etc. than I can remember. Great foundation for young boys. He also bought me a Revell visible V8 when I was about 10. A great education into internal combustion engines and they still make them

All you Dads and Granddads of boys. You can do a wonderful thing for your young boys and get and build that Revell V8 with them. Check it out

    Here is my reward finally.

Again, thank you for the support. If anyone wants to take a ride to the Jersey Shore sometime, I will make room in the garage for your baby. We have plenty of room in the Ferraris' Inn and cold beer in the fridge. Great restaurants and the beach around the corner.

    You are all welcome.
