We'll be renting a car in Florence and taking our time to Maranello for a factory visit, on to Chianti region for some days there, and work our way back to Florence. Objective is take my time, side visits, bed and breakfasts, soak in local culture/food/people. I've done Rome but this is all new to me. Any and all tips welcome:

Places/things to see, car to rent?, places to stay/eat, routes (things to see, not fastest), which navigator?. Any thoughts and tips welcome.

    Thanks. Bob O.

October is a fifty / fifty month in that area of Italy.
The weather may still be good or it could be already raining and miserable.
Particularly the region of Emilia-Romagna, where Maranello is located is subject to extreme fog, the likes of which you never see here.
September would be a better choice.

Hook up with Francesco. His company does factoty tours and private collections. In May when we took the Ferrari tour, then we added 1 day for his tour. We started out at Pagini Super cars which was a showroom tour plus walking through the factory as they were manufacturing their incredible cars. Then we were off to the Lamborghini factory for a very small (6) person personal tour of the assemblyline and free time to look at the Lamborghini museum. A very nice lunch was provided before we were driven to the family private Lamborghini museum, which was incredible. Finally we were driven to the largest private Maserati Museum in the world, which included a fine display of other vehicles and early tractors. After a full day of seeing things the average tourist does not see we were dropped off at the Planet Hotel in Maranello accross the street from the main entrance of the Ferrari Factory. This was the easiest way to see great cars and factories and it was most enjoyable.

Try to get a little lost while you're there.

My wife and I were in the area a couple months ago. We took a ride up to Maranello from Florence, and rather than take the Autostrada all the way back to where we were staying, we picked an arbitrary exit and took back roads most of the way back. We spent some time on the Mille Miglia route (which we caught while we were there), went through the Futa and Raticosa Passes, toured some remarkable roads and overall had a really great day trip. Beautiful scenery, fantastic driving roads and a great way to cap off a visit to Maranello.

    Enjoy your visit!
