Figured I’d just put this out there hoping someone may have the answer. @flash32 and I were looking at my shift potentiometer reading when removed from the actuator and wide open (not moving the sensor by hand) it showed the travel for selection at 1,018. Has anyone ever looked this data before, as we’re thinking maybe it should be 950? Hopefully I put this question in a way that makes sense? Trying to figure out if it’s going bad, was just dirty with grease, or if maybe it just rotated slightly in the fitting. Thanks all

I have some new ones in stock. LMK what you're measuring, and I'd be happy to show the readings on a brand new one tomorrow.

Thanks and yes I may have to order one. Jury is still out until I get it on the road; just snowed here. Reading the shift sensor “travel for selection” reading. Sensor #00217.

History: we’re looking at the sensor as 6th gear was flashing from hitting 950 travel when hot. Cold it was 943. We cleaned and adjusted and are now getting 913 cold. By adjusting means you can move the sensor ever so slightly before tightening down to lower the reading.

The sensor has to be connected to the car but not on actuator ...diag tool connected ...turn it by hand from stop to stop and observe" travel for selection" value on tool

I said the next time I was working on a f430 I would try it but it may be tomorrow or a month from now

Appreciate it advance for both of us

    Complitly normal !
The range of travel of the potentiometer alone is larger than the one required by the shifting mechanism (1018 vs 950 on the high side, and probably almost 0 vs 100 on the low side).
Firstly, the end of travel must obviously be imposed bt the mechanism and not by the potentiometer.
Secondly, this allows the TCU to detect some issues, such as short or open circuits in the wiring.

1018 represents a high voltage at the output of the potentiometer consistent with the full range of what can read the TCU, which is 1023 due to Analog to Digital conversion on 10 bits.
Also, the potentiometer is pretty much insensitive to grease or oil as there is no sliding contact inside. It's a contactless sensor with a magnet moving in front of an electronic chip.
    Yours looks good.

Thank you for the explanation.. I was aware of how it works but still curious what a actual working sensor reads at each end ..is it 1018 1020 1010 etc .. just a data point we are looking for ...even better if we can get a few samples

I know when a sensor goes bad (at least in one type of failure ) it reads over 1020 and movement doesn't change the valve

If they are the original units, and you have it apart, you might aswell change them. They live in a rather harsh environment, and are pretty much in constant motion. Actually, I'm quite surprised they last as long as they do. You won't be wasting money that is for sure. Install them, perform a relearn, and off you go.

I hear you, but now that I have it put back together, I'm going to see how many miles I can get out of it. Ran it hot tonight and 6th gear was at 927, so down 20 bits from before. No issues whatsoever as of now. Will try to get 500 miles on the car this week to settle the new clutch and components in and see how the sensors hold up. That's 3 years of driving for some owners :p
