After a windscreen change in my 550 98 I have noticed that, in the rain, the left windshield wiper (on the driver's side) does not finish the sweep at the top near the end of the screen (near the metal frame). It does finish near the metal frame at the bottom.

The result is that the wiper ends the sweep at an angle to the frame, not parallel, and it obstructs somewhat the driver's view.

I really don't recall this impeded vision before.

Can someone tell me if this is the way it is in a 550 98?

    Thanks,

    Antonio

Appears the wipers were removed when the windshield was changed .... and then re-installed slightly out of adjustment. You can remove the problem wiper arm from the spline and move it up one or two notches to the correct position. This should fix your problem.

    Hi speedball,

    Thank you fo your help.

That is exactly what I thought it might have happened.

Of the two wiper arms in that wiper assembly, the one that determines the angle (the thinner one) does have a metal piece (spline, pehaps) that seems to be sliding into the bracket end of the wiper arm.

The problem is that both pieces seem very solidly attached. The only way I see to move it a notch is to pull apart the two pieces hard. But that may break the union or may make it loose. Just tightening up with pliers may not do. It does not look like it was forced during the windscreen replacement.

What is the right way to remove the wiper arm from the spline?

And more importantly, will it hold the angle afterwards?

    Thanks,

    Antonio

I have never removed a wiper arm on my 550, but I'll assume it's the same as any other vehicle. There's a shaft that's driven by the wiper motor where the arm attaches. On the end of this shaft there's usually a metal spline that locks the wiper arm into a set position. Should be very simple to do, remove the whole arm at the spline by removing the nut locking this in place, then put it back in a position where the arm (at rest) sits at the correct spot on the windshield. Should closely match the position where the passenger side arm sits in relationship to the bottom of the windshield.
