Does anyone here have a key they don't want to bother with trying to make work for their car? Send me a PM, I'd rather buy one from an Fchatter than Ferraristore....

I figure that they make them this thick so that they can fit the Wedge Transponder in the head of the key. Molding the transponder into the key would mean it would not be removable. So they make it just in case they need to change the chip out.

    Damn,
I got my key today from Ferraristore.com and it already cut.
    It's useless to me.

If you read the fine print it says not for a spare part, this is supposed to mean its already cut.

The picture clearly shows a blank key

You're right Joe, it's not that great.

But its the principle of the thing

I'm gonna make it work !

Then I'll take a picture of it and send it to ferrarichat.com

    ( in jest )

Thanks to the guys that took the trouble to show how to take the blade out.

    Regards Rob

the nickel idea was a good one. I actually stuck a few nickels in there and rubber cemented them front and back....now the key works MUCH better LOL

    Good luck guys!!

Would any of you who have used your craftmanship :) to make your key work be interested in doing the same for me for a fee? I'm not too eager to go doing it myself since I have a tendency to...well, you know. :)

PM me if you'd be willing. Thanks in advance.

    OK.
I've just finished mine. It's perfect even if IDSSMS.

I ground out the inside of the black ring with a dremmel then pushed the new key which I ground to corresponding shape through the back so it fit snug in the ring. then attached plain red 1/2 and filled with sickaflex ( polyurethane )
then encased with the badge 1/2.
Now I have to not use it for a few days 'til that polyurethane sets.
That stuff holds windscreens in place.

Yeeha! I know I'm going to get another 10 HP with the new key. LOL

Did you make the replacement key the same shape as the original "1/2T" shape?

Can you describe just how far you "gound out" the black ring? All the way through?

I cut the head of the replacement key the same size as where the old blade fitted into the black plastic and parallel all the way.
Dremeled the blind end of the slot in the black plastic away so it was a thru slot (hole) stuck the new key in to the correct depth filled with 5 min epoxy and had an enzo key that fits my 360.
By the way the blank I had made in England is steel like the original.

    Perfect and thank you.

That's exactly what I was going to do.

    Appreciate the clarification.

    Very nicely done.

I should have taken pictures of the process , sorry.

I ground out all the inside of the ring and left a ring ( still firm and does not deform if squeezed.)
Most of the key head is inside I just trimmed the edges to fit in the ring.
There is no way it can pull out 'cause it takes up most of the inside.

The one above by Russel also looks fine to me as long as the epoxy grips the stubb.

When you say "I ground out all the inside of the ring" I am assuming you mean the center portion so that the outer opening went completely into the larger cavity.

I do have a good idea, and I am doing it tomorrow.

    Thanks for the clarifications.

My 65 hour weeks make that a bit tough, but since it's to be high 60's Saturday and high 70's Sunday, I am finally taking some time for a few projects.

    I'll post what I have done-promise.

Ok so I finished assembling my key assembly this weekend.

I used my Dremel to cut through the plastic into the cavity. Then I cut the key to the width of the key slot. I purchased a small container of cycroanalyate glue from Radio Shack to first tack the key shaft into place and to properly align it.

I rested the cut key onto two (2) pennies at the tip to make sure the key was straight, and I let that dry a few minutes. Then I added a bit more glue on both sides to ensure the key was solidly glued in place. I put the plain red outer panel on one side. I felt it made better sense to secure the key first so that I could fill the expoxy w/o the key shaft moving or displacing.

After letting that set a few hours I mixed JB Weld epoxy with 1/2 of a clothes pin and carefully completely filled the inner cavity moving the expoxy with the clothes pin to ensure all was properly distributed underneath the key and to make sure there were no air pockets. I then brought the epoxy up to the level of the top line of the housing.

It takes at least 15 hours for the JB to fully set, but I'll leave it for at least 24 hours before putting on the last out shell piece.

Many thanks to all who contributed and especially to Dominick who gave me the encouragement to get the bogus key shaft out!. What a guy!

BTW, the epoxy gives the key a good "mass" and it damps the resonances from the thin plastic housing.
