Ferrari SpA manufactured 213 USA F40s of which 211 remained street cars. I think there are 205 remaining in the USA.

I think there have been over 60 288 GTOs that have entered the country at one point or another, many leaving for the Far East, Japan, Germany, UK, and the Middle East etc. Today, I think there are roughly 25 to 28 cars currently here in the USA.

    Hope this helps.

Ricky I think there is some flux with the USA GTO population.

There is a car about to leave. But then again, another may enter soon, replacing it...

Joe - I would bet there are less than 200 F40s left in the U.S. In the almost almost 20 years since 1990 there have been a number exported to Japan (in the 90s) and then recently during this last economic boom to other parts of the world. Then there are a number that were crashed/destroyed. I would bet that out of the original 211 at least 10% are no longer here for one reason or another.

I asked this question of a Deputy Director for the Department of Transportation this very question some 15-20 years ago(subsequent to the implementatioin of the ICI program) to satisfy my own curiosity, as I had done a few of these{288GTOs} in the earler "modify and test Format" of the 1970s-1980s era.

Having personally been instrumental in the attainment of an EPA: "Small Volume Certrificate of Manufacture" for another marque(we call the "certs" for short, just what Faerrari has to do to cert a car for USA markets), I can tell you that according to statements made at that time, less than 40 cars had been approved by DOT-as opposed to EPA.
This does NOT include "illegally imported/entered cars"{intent seems an important issue here, I was told} under the "race car/display" loophole, or the "tourist visa" cars, cars which MUST be exported on day 365 of the vehicle's entry date.

The short version is: that combined approval, and subsequent bond releases issued for BOTH: EPA and DOT, were at that time opined to be fewer than 40 cars total.
There have been something like 10-15 additional cars since then, as well as numerous cars re-exported for commercial reasons(I've seen 6 bond released cars in Japan personally as late as 1998).
In my humble opinion, 60 seems a possible total figure since the inception of production, but would vigorously dispute 60 at any single point in time, and probably would do so to any more than 30-35 at any 1 time.

This is all rather a moot point as: as of 1-1-10, they are ALL available for import requiring only duty-for a 49 state car-HOWEVER, you will still require a laboratory modify and test procedure for the LA-55 FTP, if you want to register in California, this will NEVER, EVER change.

    Hi

    Thanks for information.

In California is there a date of manufacture where it's legal to register a car in California in it's original configuration without modifying DOT/EPA?

For example would it be legal to register a 1968 Euro car in California as it was manufactured?

    Cheers

Jeffrey: you could most definitely be right. Id settle for "less than 205", because there are 6 cars I know are no longer here.
