Do you think that a large (5 foot tall, 1000 lb) "fire-proof" gun vault kept at the office would be a reasonable substitute for a bank's safe deposit box for documents that have no monetary value but are important, like tax returns, birth certificates, insurance policy, house and land deeds?

I get tired of going to the bank every time I need something and I have this vault in which I keep the old office records. Again, nothing of monetary value, but important papers.

    EDIT:

    Vault like this:

I think it would be fine. As you stated, no monetary value, this vault is probably impervious to most anything, as you've stated. There is such a miniscule chance of damage to it's contents, the conveniance far outwieghs the risks.

does it seal well so that scents of old papers don't leak out? what about moisture seapage?

hmmm looks large enough to fit a body in. I wonder if they offer quantity discounts.

Hmmm.... multi-use it seems. It would fit 2 or 3 bodies pretty easily.

    Related question:

I still have property deeds from houses I sold more than 2 decades ago, tax returns from the late 1970s and early 1980s. How long do you keep stuff like that??

Uro, just keep in mind that those safes are HEAVY!!! The big ones weight over 1000 pounds, so you don't just set them on the second floor of a house with standard wooden floor joists. I know people who have them, and it took a major part of a day to even get one into a house because of their extreme weight. A concrete floored area would be ideal. Most of them come with bolt holes drilled into the safe floor, that way you can even bolt them down to the floor for added theft prevention.

If you have too much cash that needs storing, just send it to me for safe keeping. I promise that I will deduct $50 and send it to Rob for my Rossa renewal.

I already HAVE this vault at the office. Second floor, but poured concrete floor for second story.

When a friend of mine bought his safe, I deliberately avoided the moving "party". Somehow, the vision of a 1200 pound safe tipping over onto my leg was enough to deter me from participating in the days events. It was a wise decision. I heard that it took them all day to maneuver the thing through narrow doorways with assorted dollies and straps; all the while mindful of the massive weight just ready to topple over onto the naieve helpers. I was at home watching TV.

My dad has a safe that was made in the 20s. The safe is about 6' tall, 6' wide and 4' deep; walls are at least 5 inches of steel and it shows signs of someone trying to break it open, such as hacksaw marks and what someone said looked like signs of an explosion. It took the better part of a day to move it into the elevated area of the office with the assistance of 10+ movers. I don't think he stored anything in it except maybe a couple of handguns that he didn't feel safe with hanging around the house.

I hope so... we have a similar safe in our house to hold similar records/papers, as well as some cash and guns. I was tired of going to the bank on a regular basis to retrieve something from a box... the travel time to and from the bank alone made the safe at home a better financial idea for us. Concerning the ability to keep the enclosed items safe, ours is water/fire proof, it weighs nearly 1900 lbs... and its bolted to a concrete floor... I don't think a fair amount of dynamite would be enough to remove it... of course having it at a house in FL made me want to be sure a hurricane wouldn't blow it away either! FYI, the safe is made by a company called Pentagon and its model TL-30 / F35... we bought it used from a defunct jewelry store for ~700. I figured it would pay for itself in 4 years of safety deposit rentals... and I can have it at home!

I have a small safe that is fire-proof for important docs and whatnot... a great idea, really.

I'd still keep "original" birth certificates and a copy of my will/etc in a safe deposit box though... just "because'
