I'm wondering if they kept the upright radiators. By the look of it they could have gone either way. Ferrari's gearbox and rear suspension pickups are not as low as Mclaren's. The ferrari rear wing uprights are pretty evolved looking, interesting how they're interested in flow conditioning that air flow. The front wing still has me floored above all else though, very impressive. 6 or 7 outer elements with 3-4 split inboard. That wing will be very stable indeed. I guess I'm a bit surprised ferrari unveiled such a developed car. It almost seems like they won't have much else to show by Barcelona. Someone will break 1:20 I'm Barcelona during preseason testing though, count on it. These cars from ferrari and mclaren are really impressive so far.

My first impression is this is a dam nice looking car. A bit more black in the livery, but overall, a really nice look to this car. Definitely more room under the nose and different front pylons. The rear is definitely tighter with cleaner more defined coke-bottle everyone talks about. Added to this the rear suspension has been moved to clear the way for airflow. Rear beam looks different (wider and sculpted). Interesting the new fins that run top to bottom at the rear of the rear wing. Seem to be pointing outwards so I'm guessing this is to allow greater escape of airflow and lower pressure to provide more down-force and possibly to clean up air at DRS deployment. This is new and I'm surprised they would show it at the launch. At first impression the car looks the same, but, there are quite a lot of differences. Interesting to not the sidepods look very F2012 and I'm guessing they still have the vertical cooling and that they are venting around exhaust - Ferrari still walking a different path to everyone else here I think. Lets hope we see that really start working this year.
Agreed. Still unsure regarding verticle cooling. Looks like a very promosing car though. Still I believe Mclaren have an utterly magnificent machine and regardless of Jenny and Chico driving I believe they will be very tough to beat. Here's what concerns me. Neither Lotus, Ferrari, Mclaren have gone with a tunnel and ramp type exhaust configuration which is believed to be a superior solution. I believe W04 will have the red bull config.
I'm not convinced at all by Perez, but I think Button is a top driver. Maybe he'll be a title contender this year. All the best, Andrew.
Waiting for the jury to come back so I have a good bit of time now! All eyes on Red Bull and Mercedes now. I believe RB9 will not be as changed as the Mclaren and Ferrari. And I believe W04 will be in essence W03 with Red Bull and Mclaren components pasted on.
The step in laminar flow from the sidepod top to the exhaust system concerns me. Mclaren started their system somewhat like this last year but ultimately found as we can see with late 27 and now 28 that the transition of flow to the exhaust is about seemless ie. no step. It can also clearly be seen in the new Ferrari that the flow transition to the exhaust is minus any brakes. The new Sauber's sidepods opted for what is essentially no undercut around the sidepods/floor area which causes that area to be slightly larger, and this packaging is probably why they could not further tighten the sidepod transition to the exhaust. I actually believe the exhaust almost looks like an afterthought with the way everything else around it is designed. Sharp looking car otherwise. The Sauber is interesting! It looks like they've lowered the chassis footwell area and the nose as well, to eliminate the step - essentially gone for the MP-27 front chassis configuration, and meanwhile McLaren have gone away from that to the higher chassis like Sauber etc ran last year! It also looks like the new Sauber nose cone is not just lower but shorter, and they've really cantilevered the front wing out there.
That exhaust looks like it will be blowing on the rear suspension based on exit position (I'm certain it won't, but it does look suspicious).
I will be retweeting their release message to move W04s opening along. Mercedes have some 185k followers so it shouldn't take long to reach whatever number they're after. Agreed. Laminar flow around the apex of the sidepods appears it would have more of an affect than flow coming over the sidepods, which is how everyone else does it. I'm sure CFD shows something we cannot see and there is reason behind it but I, like you remain skeptical.
The garage door for W04 has partially opened. I have seen an enhanced pic, pending if it's real or not.......
Mmmm, are you sure about this? I think the Sauber looks like it has not undercuts just because the whole sidepods are narrower. They reduced the width but they have no undercut at the floor. That area is important is it feeds the top of the diffuser. As I said before, they must see something in the CFD that makes sense
They wont know how much 'sense' until its at speed on the full size car soon! I hope to see them have a strong season again this year.

Oh, I thought you were talking about the recess in the lower part of the sidepods. Quite impressive that they managed to make such a narrow car.
Still, doesn't the red area represent drag, or maybe a high pressure zone? I still don't get how a notched nose is no worse aerodynamically than smooth nose. -F
Red is indeed high pressure. Given it's vector it's also generating a little D/F - Whether it's worth the added drag is another Q of course. OTOH, Fauxtus (?) are claiming a little aero benefit from their vanity panel. Certainly an area in which they don't all yet agree. Anyway, the point was it's not disturbing the airbox intake. Well, if the air doesn't hit that point, it's going to hit the driver's helmet in a few feet anyway. Perhaps that's why it has no significant overall effect? Would creating a high pressure point above the nose actually give a tiny amount of front down-force? All the best, Andrew.
