Looking to get better acquainted with the 308 GT4 with a view to acquiring one. Never seen in the flesh. Is there anyone in the Chicago/Wisconsin area that has one and would be willing to have a 'play date' with me? Thanks in advance for any pointers.
I see askings as high as $125K on these cars but I also see Gullwing's cars sitting unsold at $35-45K and I know of a complete car in need of cosmetics that sold for $23K recently. There was a perfectly good silver driver that sat unsold here, on Ebay and on Hemmings for around $45K ask. Steve Alghrim told me the market is headed south, anyone agree?
Just read the latest Cavallino, and Bluemel's estimate shows the V8 Dino in a $30K-$35K bracket... unchanged for a long time. I'm not sure how he gets that, as the price didn't move over the past 24 months even when beaters at BHCC were fetching more than that.
It makes sense to me that a concours nut and bolt restored GT4 (or almost any car) would cost $125k. The estimate range from top shops to restore my '72 911 to as new or better than new is in the $100k + whatever it cost range. So for all other GT4's in various condition I would say at this time $23k-$125k is very possible. We all know the cheaper they are it probably means the more you need to put in it. The cars that have been listed for a long time are most likely dealers or flippers that got caught on the downside of the market high last January. If you like a car and can afford it the value is less important. If you're buying one to make money then it's probably a good time to buy a few and hold....for maybe 4 years.
Whenever I see a car for sale at Gullwing I immediately discount that car as being a valid comp for a good, solid driver. For those of you that have been to their facility and seen their cars you know what I am talking about. Not to slam Gullwing because they do serve a valid function in the vintage Ferrari market (wholesaler who will buy ANYTHING!) and they may from time to time get something good in, but IMHO I would never buy one of their cars without laying my own eyes on it!
Hi is anyone familiar with#09982 for sale on eBay.. looks nice with red boxer trim and mostly original tan interior...
I show that it was offered on Craigslist (West Covina) back in January of this year. Asking price was $49,500.
If anyone is looking for late-model 308GT4 then you should look no further than in this car on eBay, item 232279763673. This is a car built by Al at Strickly Ferrari who built my 1974 car and numerous platinum winning GT4's. He owns the original 1973 Paris show car and is the number one authority on restoring this model in the world. Why by a 40 or $50,000 car, that needs another $50,000+ to bring it up to this standard when you could buy this car which is more than reasonably priced and this is as fine an example you'll find anywhere!!! All you have to do is look at the thread of the car he built for me. He loves this model more than I do which says a lot, and I cannot figure out why no one has not snapped this car up as fast as they could? If anyone is seriously interested in a GT4 and doesn't live in California where you need a 75, I would fly out to Florida as soon as possible, and pick this one up while you have the chance! Why not buy a turn key car and bypass up all the hassle that all the rest of us spent to up to 25 years to complete!!
It would cost more than $50k to get the cars asking $40-50k to the level of Al's car. In fact it will likely cost more than Al's asking for the car.
Unfortunately, this continues to make parting one out, 😳😱😪🤔, a seriously viable option.
It is surprising how tight the available market for the gt4 is over the last 3 years. Very few are publically traded or listed for sale. Other than the 5-6 cars already discussed in other threads it is quiet unlike our other bretheren where 15-20 good cars are available at any one time. If you are in the market it is slim pickens.
An updated (lowered) price and an independent inspection report with healthy compression test numbers here: http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/ferraris/530774-ferrari-dino-308-gt4-10402-a-7.html Car is in Fairfield county, Connecticut. Also, a gratuitous engine bay pic (nb original air filter box and fresh UFI filter will be included - or fitted if the buyer prefers). Thanks! Image Unavailable, Please Login
Peter, We are going off topic but.. There are endless discussions on how terrible this set up is. Personally, whether my car produces x hp, or x-5hp or x+10hp I care not as long as it's running well (if others do care, great, I have no problem with that! It's your car, enjoy it as you like). On today's roads where I live I can barely use the current power, legally and/or civilly. And I don't track the car, so I've never had the 'gee, the car feel sluggish today' moment. I'm sure on hot days it has an effect, probably reduced once underway and the ducting still flows air to the filters, though not like the airbox. The biggest downside is probably the filtering. Paper filters are generally considered by the experts as superior in filtering particles and I bow to their greater knowledge. I looked hard at trying to find an off the shelf paper filter (and wonder if there isn't one that sits in the k+n shell somewhere). Given time I'd like to design something around a paper filter (fire safe clear plastic top and bottom with an oem filter). Possibly the air in the engine bay is 'dirtier' (although the side scoop must catch a lot of road grime kicked up by the cars own tires and passing traffic). A snorkel would be ideal wouldn't it? and cool! To an extent, this problem is somewhat self insured. My car runs few miles, generally on sunny days when the roads are clean (and not on dirt or gravel). Oil and filter is changed basically on time, not by miles, and so is pretty fresh even when changed. This is no substitute for a better filter, just a reduction of harm. A mitigation. And to some extent I think live a little - if a priceless 250GTO can run forward facing air scoops directly into trumpets..then maybe a lowly unsellable Gt4 can run these for a few miles a year.... (one of the reasons I'm selling is I don't drive it enough). As an aside and just in case you were wondering I've never had a problem starting etc due to heat buildup after a stop. It gets hot here but its not Texas or Arizona or Broken Hill, so maybe that's something. But hard starting perhaps has more to do with the fuel lines than air, though hot air probably doesn't help at all. Although, there is still air flowing around them with engine off, steadily cooling whereas the air in the OEM airbox would also be superheated as there is no flow at all when the engine is switched off. Who knows which is worse. Likewise, the set up isnt 'fumey' - perhaps it even clears out that fumey engine bay air by ingesting it? Sorry, I've gone on but you will ask why I've fitted these and I will repeat my reasons for trying this: a) easy access to fuel hoses anywhere, anytime. You can have the engine running and inspect almost all fuel hoses quickly and easily - I noticed a weep on one fuel line that disappeared the moment I shut the engine off. Renowned experts here have, probably quite rightly, told me that any fuel leak/weep only shows a gross negligence to maintenance. Nevertheless, being able to see and access the fuel lines has given me a lot of comfort. It isn't fun or fast removing that airbox and I wouldn't like to do it at the roadside. b) sound. Until it's really revving I personally don't think 308's sound great, even on carbs. Not even in the same class as a P300 Urraco I once had the pleasure of being in through the Sydney Harbour tunnel. Removing the airbox opens up the sound a lot, it's thoatier. And consider this, being an Aussie I can appreciate that the sound a driver hears in a RHD is better than over here with LHD. For left-hookers, the sound is all happening 'over there'. Frustrating as I can't drive everywhere at 5000rpm. So for a left-hooker, this improves this driver's satisfaction a lot. As I cant drive flat out everywhere, this improves the experience for ME. c) I dont love anything with K+N...but that very pretty engine is much more on display than when its wearing its TinHat. And who doesn't like to look into a nice clean engine bay at cars and coffee. I can return it to stock in less than an hour. PS I actually know of a mechanic who runs his without filters completely. He is, naturally, a stupid, mad, criminally irresponsible, daft, unworthy, foolish twit. The car should be removed from his care forthwith. It's disgraceful. Although, I'll give him this, it sounds great and that bloke is always smiling. Best Guy
