Selling a modified car is difficult, especially through a venue where a full inspection and road test are problematic for most potential buyers. In addition, many older cars don’t lend themselves to performance modifications, simply because the dollars invested don’t result in a performance level comparable to other cars whose performance is “built in.” If a potential buyer is interested in going faster, chances are he’s just going to look for a faster, unmodified car. And then there’s the set of buyers who would rather just do the modifications themselves, to their own taste and budget.

Hi Erol, I saw your car on BaT and was researching more about these here when I saw this. I can't PM you yet, but is there another way to reach out about a few questions?

I believe users need a minimum number of posts before being able to PM. Perhaps you can setup a temp email account or temp Google Voice phone/text number if you don't want your primary info made public.

Ah got it. I thought maybe it would let me send him a message directly but it doesn’t give me the option.
Winston I’d rather not post my personal number and email here. Do you have a throwaway email you could post that I can email you on?

As an aside, these throwaway numbers/emails are priceless when new car shopping. Prevents your real contact info from being inundated by dealer inquiries for months after.

07202 is being auctioned by Gooding at no reserve but with an estimate of $500,000-$700,000.

It is the very first GT4 made, and the original show car, so that should be worth some sort of premium, but I would think that "extra" would be in the $50-$100k range.

All of our opinions here are just that - opinion and speculation.... Not sure if your 50-100 above is on top of the normal or total. If even on top, you are pretty short - again just my opinion.

    My justification:
Base Car: 1974 Euro in 100% perfect condition. The car was unknown as car #1 for years - though the owner was on here. The car was purchased after being in the hurricane Sandy by Al Ierardi of Naples Classic Car. There are very few shops that specialize in 308 GT4 restoration, maybe two in the world I am aware of. Naples is one of them. Al's restorations have shown and won the highest awards at the Cavalino Classic. They are perfect, despite what we see coming across BAT. We haven't seen many of his cars sell. Again, just my opinion, I think one if his restored cars should be 150-200K all day. You are buying a 100% correct factory museum piece.
That valuation does not take into account this is car #1. We are in Ferrari collector dream territory that doesn't come up often. Having the first or last of any car adds on crazy amounts. It sets collectors in a frenzy. I think that adds anywhere 100-200K.

Comps - very hard here, but I am going to look at the "other" most expensive GT4 - the 1974 308GT4LM NART car sn0820. That car sold in RM Monaco in 2012 for $904,334 back then. the race car market has boomed so I would imagine that is worth way more now.

246 dinos are still in the 400K range.

Thus, my spec evaluation for $400-500 might seem a little more reasonable. I wouldn't be surprised if RM is right on the money. I would say a poor performance would be anything in the $300's, but it is no reserve.

I'd love to hear your guys feedback.

100% perfect condition??? Look at the incorrect air intake hoses. The black painted cam covers. That car is far from original.

There's a lot about this car that is different than production models, what you've pointed out and a lack of mirrors, different interior door handles, different seatbelts, and much more. This is the very first one, it's a prototype (even has the prototype Italian plates). There will always be things about a pre-production car that were different from the production cars. This car was restored back to it's 100% perfect and original condition. It is different from all the other production models.

exactly! This was probably passed around a lot between Ferrari, Bertone and Scaglietti. Fiat might have been sticking their noses in more and more post corporate acquisition. They were making one off parts for development, jigs, molds and templates for production - choosing switchgear and equipment. They were working hard to get this out to the world and the Paris show. It would be interesting to see if there were any of these items in the other first few builds.

Though a black and white photo, here is a documented picture of the open engine bay taken at the Paris Motorshow in 1973 of this car. The picture is from the REVS institute, a well well known museum and historical society.

Black cam covers, exposed aluminum ferrari logo
though it is hard to tell the color because of the photo is non color, those look like grey hoses.

Here are the pics from the show: https://library.revsinstitute.org/advanced-search/subjec%5EParis%20Motor%20Show%5Eall%5Eand!date%5E1972-1973%5Eexact%5Eand/1?sort=subjec

Wasn’t this car offered on the open market about a year ago? It seems like the ask was about $150,000, but it’s possible I’m thinking of a different car.

You must not be familiar with prototypes and pre-production models of any product from any industry.

OK - that is very interesting and the current hoses on the car look to be original. So I stand corrected.

I owned the the 2nd Alfa Romeo Montreal built in the early 2000's, it was a pre-production prototype, serial #5102, that was the 1970 Geneva Show car. Alfa retained 5101 and 5102 during its production run of 7 years as there promotion and test mule cars, after which were sold. Many differences were noted between the two prototypes vs #5103 and after. External and internal, some interior features were hand hammered sheet metal whereas the production cars were plastic formed, hand stitched dash. The major difference in the body was significantly larger B pillar vent slots. I'm sure Al researched 7202 extensively, and restored or retained most if not all of the special hand made parts. This car should fetch 3-5 times of what a very nice gt4 goes for, or more if two or more interested parties with unlimited money get involved. Best of luck with the auction.
