The schedule was pretty light - duling pianos? - Ferrari challenge was good but not much track time... the concert stuff? i dont get, but... anyway - would have been better to have GP2 or what ever its called now... or some form of other open wheel series .... or touring cars etc... loved the racing - qualifying to me was the best!

    Damn!

These are phenomenal shots! And I'm saying this as somebody who has photography as a hobby.

What lens, what camera were you using?
How did you get the strong colors? Any filters? Photoshop?

I totally love the shot with the helicopter over the car. Very well done as is your placement around the track in general.

    Bravo!

I stood up there as well and took many shots from there too. It is a fantastic spot and yes, it really shows you how high up you are: It felt like looking down INTO the pits from there. Quite unique.

What's also awesome about Turn 1 is, that when you are up in the stands you can see many parts of the track, all the way to the hairpin. It is an incredible way to follow the race. This track is one of the best ever built for F1.

Great to hear...I'll make it to COTA eventually and that sounds like the spot for me. After living 20+ yrs in the below sea level New Orleans area I'll take any elevation change I can get! :D

You should feel right at home in Austin then: I thought the bar area downtown had a New Orleans French quarter kind of feeling. Very cozy and fun.

Thanks so much for the kind words guys! It means a lot to me because it's a newfound addiction, but I'm still basically a novice. I know the track very well though, having spent so much time out there at the different races, so I have a pretty good feel for some great spots that work well. I was using a Nikon D3200 with a rented 18-300 lens. I rented it to keep from having to switch all day between the 18-55 and the 55-300. I do think it's an upgrade in general quality though. I brought out some of the color just using Windows Photo Gallery for editing. Hope that's not cheating! Sometimes I wonder if some might think I use too much contrast at times, but I just do whatever pleases my eye.

There is no cheating in using photoshop. Only the end result matters.

Yes, I love strong contrast and colors. Weather was often overcast and so it was hard to come up with decent pictures. You did by using post processing, well done.

I did decide though to bring a bigger lens next time. Mine was to 270mm and the guy next to me had 600mm and commented on the writings on the helmets. I wish.

Windows Photo Gallery? Wow, who knows what you could do with Photoshop!

Adobe offers a monthly licensing option now which is quite reasonable, IMO (starts at $9.99, but you can get a cancel-anytime deal at $29.99 and only use it 1 month). If you ever want to get into post-processing more, it's an awesome deal on the premier tool.

    BTW awesome photos!

Sadly I'm too stupid for photoshop. :(

I never figured out how to work with layers. So I'm using a bunch of individual tools, each for a specific purpose.

For photos, I highly recommend Adobe Lightroom. It is great for work flow and small tweaking.

Yeah, a friend of mine uses it and swears by it.

I'm using ACDSystems, which does a nice job as well.

Over the years I learned a few tricks in how to use the software and what settings actually have a significant effect, so to me using a known filter/setting is more important than the actual program itself.

I also like the DxO products.

    Yes, but:

C'mon Scotsman, tell us the truth. Those weren't taken from grandstands. What access rights did you have?

Not knocking you, I'm just jealous.

'Bump' to say that cleaning house, I have two SINGLE DAY "picture tickets" from 2012 (Saturday, different stands) and also a COTA Poster, from the 2012 event (large)..

Send me PM, and I'll drop them in the mail.

Party at COTA tomorrow night, so I am off to Austin.
I'll be at the Broken Spoke later.
