Hi I am the author of Metal Memory: the mystery of 0718 and Observations on Ferrari 1946 - 1966. I would be happy to address any questions anyone might have about these publications. One comment, number 3625, caught my eye: "However my criticism is that some parts are written in an almost conversational tone with some subjective comments - when coupled with a lack of citations or a bibliography, it causes me to wonder how much of the backdrop is researched versus folklore versus personal opinion." I found this interesting. Let me approach this by speaking first of Metal Memory, and its editorial structure. Rather than making a lot of declarative statements based on the extensive research and interviews, I wanted to take the reader along on the journey of discovery about 0718. The best way to do this, I felt, was to write it in the form of a dialogue driven non-fiction novel. A detective story, that unfolded along the way as things became evident. Red Herrings and all. I was able to do this as I had conducted 18 months of recorded interviews, or as I referred to them, car guy conversations. As you read them you realize they are not interviews at all, but as I requested, stories told of the time, the man, the car. As a serious original source corporate researcher for many years, decades, who spent from '85 to '92 in Italy in the Moto business, I have a particular understanding of how things are done, from leveraged capital for the development of new models to operations on the shop floor, if you will. This allows me to address my subject, with a certain familiarity for the reader, in a conversational tone, that respects their intellect, their knowledge of the subject and present it entertainingly with just a touch of native Italian sarcasm. As if we are enjoying a good meal in Milan. Nathan suggested I leave my email as well if anyone wanted to contact me directly: [email protected] This is my personal email, rather then the Velocity Group business email.
^^^ Scott, I wrote the comment you quoted, which was directed at the socio-political backdrop history discussed in Observations. Thank you for taking the time to explain your intended approach. I think you succeeded, making the book a unique offering especially when coupled with the beautiful production. Since I have only a headline knowledge of the post-war Italian economy and motor industry, it is sometimes difficult for me to separate the factual from the "Italian sarcasm" in the book. But as I previously said, I'm glad I have both books. They have added to my knowledge & appreciation of Ferrari. If you would like to continue this discussion, I am happy to do so via private message, or we can email each other directly.
Official factory book "La Nuova Dolce Vita - Ferrari Roma". Hardbound. Very nicely done. Format 33 x 25 cm. 130 pages. Print #6998/20. Order #095993588. Marcel Massini Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
A proper book, see photo #1 in post #3633. I knew this question would come up and that's why I took that pic so that you can see the side. Hardcover (I had said hardbound). A real book, heavy. 130 pages. Marcel Massini
Hard to see from the photo if it's a book or a slightly thicker then normal hardcover brochure. What are the chapter titles relating too?
My definition of a "brochure" is a softbound publication (in our Swiss language). A proper book would be hardbound. This is a hardbound/hardcover publication. Not a brochure. There is no (text/data) information in this book. It is a pure photo book with 130 pages. Marcel Massini
Hi Marcel, is this book sold out? I have searched online for a copy and can’t find a single book for sale. Thanks, Jonathan
The book is brand new, came out a few days ago. Official factory publication. Your official dealer should be able to get you a copy. Marcel Massini
Yes like some -not all- Portofino California owners some of them are frankly not typical Ferrari drivers, more into the luxury item than spirited driving. I recall traveling to Modena in May 2011 with my UK publisher and his 456. We were cruising relaxed on a sunny day around 200kph on the endless plains between the Mont Blanc tunnel, the Alps, and before joining the busy Milan Modena autostrada with almost no traffic and caught a California going just a bit slower than us...the driver who appeared to have been lost in his thoughts seemed a bit frazzled to be suddenly caught by a car going faster even though we were just inching on him not arriving at full tilt...then he did something really odd, he was obviously not at all used to such speeds...to change lanes to give way after passing the only truck within miles he actually slowed down then sped up again... completely clueless, I guess he went back to driving a 500SL, 7 series or big Audi after that.
Just got my one from Gilena. I stopped years ago buying everything with "Ferrari" printed on it, and now only selectively order books on topics which really interest me. Always really loved the FXX concept (and seeing/hearing them in action). With this scope, this is probably one of the best reads and most entertaining books on a specific model and topic for my personal taste. Written from a real insider's perspective, yet not overloaded with too many technical details.
Whoa, there. You’re talking to a former 500SL (R107) owner. They’re very suitable for a gentleman who’s reached a certain station in life. A US tuning firm, well known for its Ferrari work, has recognized the potential in these cars and is doing highly engineered performance upgrades without any boy racer cosmetic modifications.
Hey I used a 560SEL as everyday driver in my early 40's when I had my Khamsin and enjoyed it, though I wore out the pads very quickly, a lot of panzer inertia to stop in a hurry. Are you talking about Renntech? Anyway I fear we are straying off topic, I will have an F book announcement in a week
