Re-read what I wrote. I never said it was not dangerous. But the objection that asking Piquet to crash was a huge potential situation for carnage and death and dismemberment is overstated. I am not the only one who says this, F1 drivers and insiders have said a crash into a straight wall is not particularly dangerous or likely to cause any problems. That's just how it is. Massa has nothing to do with it... the simple fact is that while it was unsporting and contrary to the rules, the "someone could have been hurt or killed" is probably more than a bit overplayed.
That remains to be seen, doesn't it? It may be that the FIA doesn't do anything to him in terms of banishment. Or they may only do it for a year or two like Stepney/Coughlan (who are probably more complicit in cheating than Symonds, arguably). Besides, who knows what Flavio and Symonds had agreed to... maybe Flav told Pat he'll set him up for life if he refuses to roll over on him, or that he will take up any one of numerous opportunities available to him and will bring Symonds along with him. I think Flavio potentially has a lot more to offer Symonds than the FIA does. So I would tend to think that, depending on what Flavio was offering, he would be losing more by taking immunity, still having been fired from Renault, then being unable to find work elsewhere in F1. Just a possibility though
I don't think his going was anything to do with the FIA and the immunity question, I suspect Renault told him (and Flav) 'resign or you're fired'.
The more I think about it, the safer the whole thing seems. An intentional crash is probably far less risky than just racing 100% where you could be involved in an unintentional, unpredictable, and unexpected shunt.
With Jr. the shunts were always predicable and expected. Its the intentional part that's being debated
It seems to me that if Renault had the fix in, Alonso should be disqualified and their points should be taken away. If I'm not mistaken, that moves everyone up a notch and makes Massa 2008 World Champion? At the very least, Hamilton gets an asterisk on his title, in my book anyway.
If they are DQed from Singapore, Hamilton increases his gap over Massa to 3 points. I think we need to accept that Hamilton won the 2007 WDC more than fairly and more than squarely.
Yeah, I just think the whole "it was DANGEROUS" thing is being overplayed. There are numerous crashes over the average F1 weekend... what drivers have been injured from crashes over the past 10 years? I'd say it works out to a fraction of a %. Not that it's completely safe, but some folks are feigning shock and disgust over the safety factor, and if it was that dangerous, it wouldn't be on TV. It's not like PK got into the car quivering and not knowing if he would ever see his family again, and obviously HE didn't think it was that dangerous considering it was his ass in the car and he voluntarily crashed it The other thing that strikes me is how either dumb or arrogant Flavio is.
True but, consider that Jr probably got an extra year in an F1 car and an extra million dollars for his actions. And Flavio and Symonds are no longer employed by Renault. Jr definitely won this one.
Last rumors are then the GF is dumping Briatore too (just like Denniss wife divorced him after the spy scandal)
Oh sure... I'm sure they are happy. Wonder what the conversation around the dinner table is at the Piquets: - Jnr: Dad, WE WON! Flavio is fired. - Snr: GREAT! - Jnr: Now what? - Snr: <long silence> - Jnr: Who's going to be my manager? - Snr: <long silence> - Jnr: When can I race again? - Snr: <long silence> - Jnr: What teams do you think will want to hire me? - Snr: <Sigh followed by long silence> - Jnr: Where's my future? - Snr: Well I have 3 world championship trophy's that you can polish.
Talk about a money whore...either that or Flabio has a really great personality that hot babes can't resist.
Pat didn't take the offer of immunity. Either way, it doesn't matter because Renault threw them both under the bus where they belong.
I'm not so sure. The way I see it, Flav is what, 59 or so, an independently wealthy self-made man with numerous business interests and living a life that most men dream of. OTOH, Piquet Jr. is 20 something loser who tried to ride his famous father's coattails but failed. What's Jr. gonna do the next 30 years besides peddle his ass in the clubs of Sao Paulo? I'd say both lost but Jr. will end up the laughing stock out of this debacle. What a moron!
Those 3 Championships actually came in handy!! Senior had a good enough relationship with MM to come up to him and discuss the entire story so FB got owned.
Piquet Jr was already a laughing stock. Now he's a squealer/laughing stock that no F1 team will ever touch. Never burn your bridges.
I wonder how FB will service his yacht Force Blue (FB) now haha. I really respected him as a business man however this just makes me sick. During the F1 here, he opens his Billionaire club in the Fairmount hotel for the weekend but I guess he can kiss that one goodbye since he has no official affiliation with F1 anymore. Now that I think of it, its a shame I never went but I had amazing times so I cannot complain!
Dude, what did Alonso do? I think what he did is worse and other teams still want him! But then again he is back to back world champion. Does anyone feel his championships are tainted because of the association with FB?
Alonso can still make money for a team. If Renault were winning Flav wouldn't have gotten the ax so quickly.
